Upstart Crow

image

Fridays from 2 February at 9.30pm

image

From the quill of Ben Elton (Black Adder) this rip-roaring comedy is a fictional account of the Bard’s early
career.

It’s 1592 and Will Shakespeare is just at the beginning of his career. His early work is looked down on by the
literary establishment, and he’s not taken seriously at home. Will feels like he’s a great playwright in the
making, if only he could catch a break. And his troubles don’t stop there. Will is under pressure to churn out
more work, undermined by his snooty rival Robert Greene, and his badly-behaved parents are living in his
house. As he struggles to make his name, Will mislays a nearly treasonous masterpiece, gets tricked into
wearing a very embarrassing pair of tights, has a spot of bother with the wife over some sonnets, and meets
three witches who predict great things for him. Packed with sparkling wordplay, Upstart Crow pays fitting
comic tribute to the greatest writer in the history of the English language – and reveals some rather surprising
stories about where his best ideas came from …

Starring:

  • David Mitchell as Will Shakespeare, (Peep Show, That Mitchell and Webb Look)
  • Harry Enfield as John Shakespeare (Ruddy Hell! It’s Harry and Paul, Bad Education)
  • Liza Tarbuck as Anne Hathaway, (Extras, Linda Green)
  • Gemma Whelan as Kate, (Game of Thrones, Mapp & Lucia)
  • Mark Heap as Sir Robert Greene, (Friday Night Dinner, Lark Rise to Candleford)

How come the ABC has Ill Behaviour isn’t it a Showtime program?

It’s was originally on BBC2

League of Gentlemen

image

From Tuesday 16 January at 10:00pm

image

Much-loved comedy The League of Gentlemen returns with three brandnew episodes to celebrate the group’s twentieth anniversary at the BBC. Get ready to go back to Royston Vasey!!

Once again, the three performing members of the League - Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton and Mark Gatiss - will be playing a veritable host of bizarre and darkly comic characters inhabiting the fictional Northern town of Royston Vasey, in scripts written by themselves and co-creator Jeremy Dyson.

Royston Vasey is facing a threat more dire than anything it has faced before: dark rumours of boundary changes that could erase the town from the map forever. The fight to save Royston Vasey from administrative annihilation will come from unexpected and surprising directions, all of them local…

The League of Gentlemen’s original radio series, On The Town With The League Of Gentlemen, won a silver Sony award 20 years ago this year. The first series of the ground-breaking TV series won a BAFTA award, a Royal Television Society Award, and the prestigious Rose D’Or in Montreux

Fleabag

image

From Monday 19 February at 9.30pm

image

Meet FLEABAG. She’s not talking to all of us; she’s talking to YOU.

A hilarious and poignant window into the mind of a dry-witted, sexual, angry, porn-watching, grief-riddled woman, trying to make sense of the world.

As she hurls herself headlong at modern living, Fleabag is thrown roughly up against the walls of contemporary London, with all its frenetic energy, late nights, and bright lights, in this very modern mix of fatalism and hedonism, sustaining a merry-go-round of broken dreamers.

Unfettered and unfiltered, Fleabag tears through the series sleeping with anyone who dares to stand too close, squeezing money from any orifice, rejecting anyone who tries to help her, and keeping up the bravado all along. Because that’s just the kind of fucked up, normal person she is.

By turns hilarious and heart-breaking, this is the thoroughly disarming confessional of a woman so totally detached, she’s utterly lost, and ultimately wondering what the hell she ought to be doing in life. Much like the rest of us.

ABC has picked up the rights to this year’s Tropfest, due to air on February 17. The event will be shown live from Sydney’s Parramatta Park, on ABC Comedy and streamed via ABC iView, Facebook and YouTube. Susan Sarandon will head this year’s jury.

How soon before they just go back to being “ABC2”?
