WENTWORTH, MR INBETWEEN and GRAND DESIGNS AUSTRALIA win at the 2021 AACTA Awards

FOXTEL congratulates the cast and creative teams of WENTWORTH , GRAND DESIGNS AUSTRALIA and MR INBETWEEN creator Scott Ryan for winning a series of major awards at tonight’s AACTA Awards, presented by FOXTEL Group.

The final season of the iconic Foxtel Original series WENTWORTH, which has been watched by millions around the world, was voted Favourite Australian TV Drama by Australian viewers as part of the Audience Choice Awards.

A global hit and long-time fan favourite, WENTWORTH has written its own chapter in Australian television history since its premiere in 2013, leaving an indelible mark on the international television landscape where it has screened in more than 170 territories to critical acclaim. Over the years, the award-winning series has featured 24 main and 48 supporting cast, including some of Australia and New Zealand’s biggest stars.

Bernard Curry who plays Jake Stewart in Wentworth said: “We are so thrilled that after having to say goodbye to this incredible ground-breaking drama that we all so adored, we get a little parting gift of an AACTA Award. We always knew that the fans of this show are incredibly passionate people. This just proves it.”

Scott Ryan, creator, writer, and star of the critically acclaimed drama MR INBETWEEN took home two awards at tonight’s ceremony for his ground-breaking work on the third and final season of the Foxtel Original series: Best Lead Actor in a Drama and Best Screenplay in Television (for Episode 6).

The Foxtel Original series has attracted widespread acclaim since the season one premiere and stars Scott Ryan as Ray Shoesmith, a man who ‘takes care of people’ — collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns, and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis. As Ray’s increasingly volatile work collides with his imploding personal life, he finds himself struggling to stay atop the complex web he has woven.

On winning Best Screenplay in Television, Scott Ryan said: “It’s a real honour and I am pretty stoked. I consider myself a writer first and foremost, so to receive an award for my writing is pretty great”.

Grand Designs Australia took out the award for Best LifeStyle Program , for one its most emotionally charged series to date. Hosted by multi award-winning architect Peter Maddison , Grand Designs Australia follows new homeowners, all of whom are driven visionaries and their remarkable journeys, as these ambitious and resilient architectural trailblazers push their finances and their families to the limit in their quest to create remarkable one-off homes. Grand Designs Australia returns for its 10th season in 2022.

Host Peter Maddison said: “This award means the world to me and is the culmination of ten years of honing a craft and working with amazing home owners who opened their lives to us, and that’s a privilege. Also to be recognised by our industry is the ultimate.”

Brian Walsh, Executive Director of Television at Foxtel Group said: “We want to congratulate all the winners and nominees at this year’s AACTA Awards. It has been an incredible year for Australian storytelling despite the hurdles thrown at the industry. We are particularly thrilled to see Wentworth, Mr Inbetween and Grand Designs recognised with wins tonight and know the love and support for these Original series continue to live on with millions of fans right around Australia.”

As if that needed to be in the telecast. Great initiative for developing TV programs but keep it with technical awards which were not telecast.

Commercial television. Not much for them again. Nine won with Lwgo Masters, Ten with MasterChef. Seven with nothing, again. Seven need a show with “master” in the title to win an award next year. Lol.

They have a new Fishing reality show coming up next year called Master Baiters. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Really makes no sense what was cut from the telecast. Any wonder why people don’t bother tuning in?

A food and beverage attendant tested positive. This person worked in the “back of house area” and that’s the exposure area.

Belfast had the most nominations (seven) but only won one category - Judi Dench for best supporting actress.

The first nominees for the 2022 AACTA Awards were announced today, in the short film category.

If anyone is a paid member for the AACTA Awards, then just a reminder that voting for the Television Awards (round 1) closes on Monday. Nominations are announced on October 24.

Shows eligible for Best Drama are: After the Verdict, Bump, Firebite, Heartbreak High. Love Me, Mystery Road Origin, The Tourist, Troppo and Wolf Like Me. [3 dramas are from FTA, while 6 are from Streaming sites]
Shows eligible for Best Miniseries: Barons, Savage River, The Twelve, True Colours, Underbelly: Vanishing Act.

Some interesting observations with voting:

  • No Home and Away nor Neighbours listed for Best Drama, and neither are any cast for the acting awards.
  • Five Bedrooms is listed under Best Comedy and is up against shows like Aftertaste and Summer Love, and several “panel-variety type shows”.
  • Five Bedroom stars Doris Younane and Stephen Peacocke are up for Best Comedy Performer and noone else from the show is up for your vote.
  • Half of The Twelve’s “jury” are up for acting gongs, while the other half are not.
  • Best Factual Entertainment Program Award, for shows from News-Panel Shows, interview shows, game shows, and lighter factuals, while Best Documentary/Factual Program are more of the serious type shows.

Good to have some Audience Choice awards. Sports Program and Sports Commentary Team is a good addition. Just hope they don’t prioritise the Viewers Choice Awards over jury based awards on Awards Night.

According to an email i have received, the 2022 AACTA Awards will be held on Wednesday 7 December at The Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. Channel 10 will air the awards at 7.30pm (and it will be repeated on Fox Docos on Saturday 10 December at 7.30pm)

Since the AACTA’s started in 2012 (minus the last 2 years due to the pandemic), there were always two ceremonies. One for the crafts categories and some minor awards, and the main ceremony a few days later.

Not sure if there were ever two ceremonies when it was know as the AFI Awards prior to 2012 though.
