A Voice to Parliament - News Coverage

A referendum is planned to change the constitution to provide for A Voice to Parliament.

A Voice to Parliament is a body enshrined in the Constitution that would enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide advice to the Parliament on policies and projects that impact their lives.

A Voice to Parliament gives the Australian Government the opportunity to make policies with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, rather than for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Voice Debate

Sky News

Sunday 4 September 9pm AEST

An upcoming special television debate on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament is set to be aired by Sky News Australia.

The debate, hosted by Sky News host Chris Kenny, will answer burning questions about the referendum for the Voice and what it will mean for Australia.

Panellists include Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, Marion Scrymgour MP, Director of the Uluru Statement from the Heart Dean Parkin, and Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

I surely hope that Bolt and Kenny don’t “go head-to-head” in this debate. Kenny is meant to be the independent moderator, yes?

The Yes campaign for the Voice to Parliament was officially launched in Adelaide this evening.

The ABC has named Dan Bourchier as the correspondent for the referendum. Dan did a live cross from Adelaide to Tamara Oudyn during tonight’s 7pm Victorian bulletin.

Just updates will do and full coverage on ABC. 7 had updates during the 1999 referendum with no full-blown coverage. It was Stan Grant who did the updates back then.

According to The Australian’s Sophie Elsworth, the ABC wrote an email to staff yesterday, which outlines that a “deep-dive” session into “impartiality” will discuss “some knotty editorial policy issues” and how reporters should ensure they do not favour one view on the Indigenous voice to parliament. It goes on to explain that staff are about to “embark on one of the most difficult and consequential stories of recent times”. The session will be held today.

That sounds good about the ABC. Would love to hear more about how the session went. Wonder what other networks are planning to do. It’s an interesting situation.

ABC News coverage of the announcement of the referendum question.

Got some coverage at the start of 11:30 news, though the announcement wasn’t carried live.

The wording:

A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

Do you approve this proposed alteration?

Jason - the knack you’ve picked up recently of correcting others on their spelling is very rich given virtually every one of your posts has an error of some sort.
