The Killer Doll Returns

Chucky season two premieres Thursday, October 27, fast-tracked and streaming exclusively on 9Now.

With Halloween approaching, it’s time for the return of the spooky horror series Chucky, premiering Thursday, October 27 at 5.00pm AEDT, on 9Now, fast-tracked and streaming exclusively for free for Australian audiences with weekly episodes.

Created by Don Mancini, who wrote all the Chucky films, the TV series is a continuation of the chilling film franchise chronicling the murderous escapades of the notorious killer doll.

The TV series follows the story of 14-year-old Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), an artist-to-be obsessed with dolls. After buying a Good Guy doll in a yard sale, he discovers itl is possessed by the soul of fictional serial killer Charles Lee Ray (voiced by Brad Dourif). Chucky starts to commit murders around Jake’s hometown of Hackensack, New Jersey, turning it into a crime scene and leaving Jake to become the suspect.

Season two takes off where the first season ended, with Jake and his friends Devon and Lexy believing the possessed doll is gone, though still being haunted and hunted by the killer doll. The three of them are sent to a Catholic school, which happens to be the same place where Chucky grew up. After his diabolical plan to invade the children’s hospitals of America was foiled, Chucky has begun preparing an army of Good Guy dolls to seek revenge on those he holds responsible.

The core characters of season one return in the second series. As well as Zackary Arthur and Brad Dourif, the cast includes Björgvin Arnarson as Devon Evans, Alyvia Alyn Lind as Lexy Cross, Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Teo Briones as Junior Wheeler and Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany. There will also be new faces, including Lachlan Watson playing Glen/Glen, Chucky and Tiffany’s gender-fluid child. Several new cast members are familiar with the horror genre, including Gina Gerson and Joe Pantoliano (Bound), Tony Nappo (Saw II) and Lara Jean Chorostecki (Hannibal).

How did this end up on 9now and not on Stan?

Perhaps not considered premium enough or the right type of content for Stan? They may have only acquired BVOD streaming rights also.

The network would be making fairly calculated decisions as to where certain content they get through their deals would go.

9Now attracts a fairly signification portion of Nine’s revenue now from ads, so it’s in their best interest to have exclusive content on there to bring in viewers.

Is anyone having trouble streaming the Nine channels on 9Now at present? I’m using Apple TV.

Seven and Ten streaming working fine.

Thanks.

Fun fact: One of the actors on the show (appears at 1:20 in the trailer) was a Big Brother Australia contestant in 2013

Seems Stingers has been pulled from 9now… which is interesting considering that it’s been on there for a number of years and pretty well was an internal production

9Now launches first in market start over functionality

Nine is revolutionising the way audiences consume live television with the launch of a ‘start over’ function on its broadcast video on demand (BVOD) platform, 9Now.

Available on Web and Mobile Apps, and coming soon to Connected TVs (Apple TV, Android TV, Telstra TV, Amazon Fire TV), 9Now’s start over button addresses one of the biggest pain points when it comes to watching live content on BVOD – missing the start of a program and having to wait for the video to be published.

Now, thanks to the start over feature, viewers who join a live channel late in the program can start the program over, up to two hours from the program’s start time. Once a viewer is in start over mode, they are also provided with the ‘jump to’ option which either takes them straight to the live broadcast or, if a new program has started, they can jump straight to the beginning of the next program.

Nine’s Director of Programming and 9Now, Hamish Turner, said “9Now’s focus is simple: to entertain and inform Australians with the very best in sport, news and entertainment. This focus is pivotal with the increase in streaming on connected TVs.”

“9Now’s daily active accounts have seen 52% growth over the last two years, and the percentage of live viewing minutes up 40%. The new start over function, coupled with Full HD of all our live simulcast channels enhances the viewing experience, ensuring our audience will never miss a minute from their favourite shows.”

Nine’s Chief Product Officer, Bec Haagsma, said “This investment in 9Now is the perfect example of the market-leading innovation happening across Nine – unique technology for our market, putting our viewers in complete control of their viewing experience, and functionality that no other live broadcaster in the country can compete with. It’s live TV, better.”

“We know our audiences, and are making product improvements with their needs and preferences in mind. We’ve found that on average, people can tune in 5-6 minutes late to the news, and up to 15-20 minutes late to shows like The Block, which is completely relatable given the juggle of work, family and other commitments we all deal with. Now when they open 9Now they can control their viewing of our live schedule, whenever and wherever it suits them.

“This is great news for our advertisers as well, with an increase in total minutes consumed by viewers. For example, we could see as much as a 10% growth in 9News total minutes from this single feature – improving both consumption and engagement.”

The start over function is part of a comprehensive viewer-focused upgrade of 9Now, which brings together the simplicity of free-to-air TV, with the convenience and interactivity of digital.

Other key improvements to the live streaming quality on Nine’s 24/7 live channels include:

  • Full HD 1080p
  • 50 frames per second (FPS) on Channel 9 and 9Gem
  • 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound
  • Closed captions

This summer, 9Now will also launch an entirely new in-app experience that instantly plays live TV as soon as you open the app (just like traditional TV), whilst letting you browse the catalogue for your favourite content. This innovative, immersive and yet familiar TV experience will further enhance the live experience for Nine audiences.

Had a look on 9Now’s website and they have added Seasons 1-3 of MASH, or the Col. Blake era.

Nine probably bought the seasons from Disney, which now owns the copyright to the entire MASH series after its merger with 20th Century Fox.

I wonder if it will air on 9Go? Would work well during the afternoon.

Seven have had the rights the past few years for 7TWO, after Ten had them in the early/mid 2010s for ONE.

Wait? Are you talking about Mash? Where was Ten showing this in its schedule?

Around the 2010s, when 10 got rights off Seven. I clearly remember watching repeats on ONE in 2015.
