Licensing deals have always been very scarce and murky, with resolutions based off whatever media releases, articles, quotes and observations based on broadcast or vod comtent that we see.

As it stands:

Seven have active outputs with WB and Fox. (With some expiring runs from previous Disney and NBCU deals).

Nine have active outputs with Roadshow, Sony, Disney and NBCU. (With some expiring runs from a previous deal with MGM).

Others like Paramount are shared amongst all three (the studio has never done an exclusive or even sole output). Icon has been with Seven for about 15 years. Studiocanal is shared between Seven and Nine. Other outputs include CBS with 10 (obviously), ITV with Seven and BBC with Nine.

10 have, as usual, fuck all.

Had a quick look at Sony Crackle and there is a lot of series on there that are not available anywhere else, except some are as pay-per-view on Apple and Windows Store etc.

Under Nine’s new deal with NBCUniversal, the network will gain access to Downton Abbey feature film, which is important as the original drama was a ratings hit for Seven. Could Nine be able to repeat the original series in the future? Nine will also get Bourne, The Fast and the Furious, Back to the Future and Shrek franchises plus new movies Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, and Yesterday.

BBC content is actually split among the five networks: Nine has David Attenborough natural documentaries and some occasional music specials, Seven has Mrs Brown’s Boys, 10 has The Graham Norton Show, SBS has some documentaries (non-nature) and second rights to dramas and ABC has Doctor Who, some current affair documentaries and second rights to dramas.

Nine seem to have the lions share on FTA though (i.e.) 9Gem shows.

It is made by So Television which is owned by ITV, and it is distributed by ITV.

Looks like Seven still have rights, will air it on the main channel Sunday December 8 at 8:30pm.

But whether Nine will then get it and right before Christmas to air it again, who knows.

So how does SBS get old Fox shows like New Girl ?

They cherry pick shows they are interested in airing? Sometimes this includes niche content which is overlooked by other channels, other times they buy rights to shows which have previously aired on other networks which become available.

Nine Cements Leadership of Premium Video Market with Extensive NBCUniversal Deal

  • 9Now will dramatically expand its unscripted reality library to include E! and Bravo shows, as well as hundreds of hours of scripted comedy and drama from the NBCUniversal catalogue

  • 9Now and Nine to become the new broadcast video on demand (BVOD) and broadcast home for all new Bravo U.S. programming from 2020

Nine has signed a significant multi-year deal with NBCUniversal (NBCU) encompassing both scripted and unscripted, territory premiere and library television content as well as feature films. The deal will see Nine substantially amplify the offering of 9Now in addition to providing premium content for its primary and digital terrestrial linear channels.

Hugh Marks CEO of Nine said: “Traditionally, platforms like 9Now have been focused on being largely a reflection of our linear channels. This deal with NBCU sees 9Now firmly beyond being a ‘catch up service’ and instead become an entertainment destination in its own right.

Over the past four years, we have established 9Now as the leading commercial broadcast video on demand platform in Australia, but this deal with NBCU helps us not only ensure the consistency of 9Now audience throughout the year, it also helps us better compete with the digital giants with a premium video product, which is unmatched in this market.”

The deal will also see Nine and 9Now secure first run of shows for premium NBCU scripted comedy and drama content with leading titles for 2020 including Resident Alien, Bluff City Law and the highly anticipated new animated American comedy, Duncanville, which is co-created and executive produced by EmmyÂŽ and Golden Globe AwardÂŽ-winning producer, actress and director Amy Poehler and producers, Mike and Julie Scully (The Simpsons).

9Now will also launch new territory premiere programming exclusively to the platform including Suits spin-off Pearson, The Arrangement, The Enemy Within and Reverie.

Rounding out the offering, viewers can catch up on favorite classic U.S. television series such as Magnum P.I. and Miami Vice, as well as beloved titles from the NBCUniversal library including Friday Night Lights, The Mindy Project and Royal Pains, amongst others.

Dramatically expanding Nine’s content library on live streaming and on-demand platform, 9Now, the move will also consolidate and build on 9Now’s leadership of the Australian premium video market.

“We have had a longstanding partnership with Nine and are delighted to expand our relationship with them through this monumental deal that highlights the diverse offering across the entire NBCUniversal portfolio,” said Belinda Menendez, President & Chief Revenue Officer, Global Distribution and International, NBCUniversal.

Nine will also remain as the free to air home of brand-new and classic feature films from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation, giving audiences access to key titles in hit franchises such as Bourne, The Fast and the Furious, Back to the Future and Shrek, as well as new movies including Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, Yesterday and Downton Abbey.

Surprised some of the first run comedy/dramas + classic series aren’t going to Stan either exclusively or alongside being on 9Now. Seems like a missed opportunity to boost its content library whilst keeping the Bravo/reality content for 9Now & (mostly) 9Life

It’s because if Foxtel I think, they’ve got the svod deal with NBCU (competitor to Stan).

Saw a new promo for 9Now during ARIA Awards tonight, featuring personalities from most of Nine’s shows.

It’s been airing for a few weeks now

The Enemy Within and The Arrangement are both from NBCUniversal. The Enemy Within aired for one season in the first half of 2019. The Arrangement was shown on E! over two seasons in 2017 and 2018.

And Heroes of course ran on Seven over decade ago, the first show they got when they poached the NBCU output from 10. It was an initial hit, but then quickly faded.

It should have only been a limited series I think. It ended up getting too confusing, which is why I stopped watching.

Instead she receives an unusual contract connected to West that will change her life forever. In a town where fame means everything, Megan must decide how far she’s willing to go to launch her career and whether or not she will accept “The Arrangement”.
