The Brisbane promo has no Peter Overton while the Melbourne promo omits the NRL reference for this

… anyone notice the similarity between the AI “OB van” used in the “70 Years of Television” promo on 9 and the pics taken of the old ABC Adelaide EMI OB van in the shed at the Birdwood Motor Museum?

Truly underwhelming. Way too much Overton, Macguire and Grimshaw. It was basically all about TCN. Hardly anything about the first 20 years. Historic inaccuracies and omissions. Ten barely mentioned, let alone SBS.
I know that Nine wanted to suck in viewers 25-54 who would barely know or care about anything pre about 1990 But as a tribute to the industry as a whole it was a big fail.

Of course it was. Nine doesn’t believe anything or anyone exists outside of the TCN/Sydney bubble. I could’ve told you that.
I didn’t think it was too bad. Was always going to be a challenge to cover every decent show from the genres featured. Though i agree too much on Overton in particular. Peter Hitchener, despite having a longer tenure than Overton, got a couple of words in but the show barely gave a mention of the “other” Brian. Surely the black Saturday recall warranted a mention of Brian Naylor, who led GTV news to victory for close to 20 years, who died in those fires.
And did we really need Karl calling David Koch an a-hole, even in jest. Surprised Nine didn’t edit him out, tbh. They already had Today well represented.
At least some Seven, Ten and ABC shows got a mention.

You’re right, that is a significant story that should have been told. But I have to admit, not being from Victoria, I don’t know/recall that he died in the Black Saturday bushfires.

Not enough idents for my liking and as someone who usually doesn’t watch Nine, SO many ad breaks! It was fun (as someone who is 20) to reminisce with my mum about our favourite shows/idents and Gina Riley’s impressions of KAK and Pauline Pantsdown got a good laugh out of us. Agree on there not being enough of the other networks, and they ought to have edited Karl out. I frankly wish all the networks would just collaborate on one definitive docuseries about Australian television. That would be incredible as a sort of ‘series of record’.

I am also someone who never watches Nine normally, and I was amazed how many ads and ad breaks they had during the show. I suppose it’s a good sign (for Nine) that they are still scoring plenty of advertising inventory, but when you mainly watch Ten or ABC or streaming services, you get used to fewer/no ads!

… how many ads for Trivago? we watch some 9 in Adelaide and can now quote every line from all of their ads we see them so often …
must admit i tune out when the ads come on but I don’t recall anything from Trivago

The promo was quoted in Calum Jaspan’s On Background column inside The Age and SMH today. He wrote that the recreation of Nine’s first-ever broadcast in 1956 was made with the permission of former Nine boss David Gyngell, son of the late Bruce Gyngell.
Calum also wrote that Nine would be hosting a function at its North Sydney HQ tonight, celebrating the 70 years milestone. It would be attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, NSW Premier Chris Minns, NSW Opposition Leader (and former Nine personality) Kellie Sloane, business and sporting figures, and even Daryl Somers.
