2SM 1269 Sydney

I am only an occasional listener of Talkin Sports, I was wondering where Tunks went. I thought they all had good relationships as they had been together for years. I thought these type of “conflicts” between the hosts, only happen at 2gb over the years and Triple M had one too. The abc had an issue with David Morrow but that was a bit different with the employer asking him leave ? Due to mic error which meant something went to air that should not have. Perhaps it happened in the 70s and 80s but can’t remember .

A racist joke went to air that wasn’t meant to, on ABC Illawarra, when Morrow thought he was off air.

I had a similar experience with a regional TV broadcaster that has a similar operating model and ownership structure to SRN: in my case it ended 30 years on/off in radio and TV broadcasting. I finished my working life doing IT work outside of broadcasting.

The harm that some broadcasting employers do to individuals cannot be under stated - in almost any other business these outfits would have been put out of business by competition from disgruntled former employees years ago, but in radio and TV they are protected from new competition.

Once these businesses get to a certain size their owners are also protected from their own bad decisions by the cash flow they have as well.

That’s correct. It was on dab as well. A Monday night match.

Might be just me, but has 2SM done anything to their AM audio recently, (last few weeks)?

I’m not a regular listener but the last 2 mornings on my way down to work I was listening to Richard King on breakfast & 2SM sounds much louder than it used to & as a result, I’m guessing it’s modulating the transmitter more & thus the signal is stronger & getting out further, also sounds like there might be a little bit less Bass in the audio over what it was a few weeks ago when I last tuned in?

I thought 2SM had slightly too much Bass & 2HD has way too little, but 2SM sounds about right now, if only they’d do something with the 2HD processing on both the AM & FM translators.

I think 2SM audio is now louder than 2UE, & 2GB, possibly the loudest of all the AM stations?

I tuned from 2HD to 2SM this morning at Somersby just North of the Star104.5 transmitter site & 2SM was loud & clear like it was a local Gosford AM station, it wasn’t like this a few weeks ago & hasn’t been for a long time.
I’d say in the past it’s been one of the lowest volume AM stations in Sydney & going through the rock cuttings on the M1, North & South of the Hawkesbury River, 2SM would fade quite a lot (much more than 2UE), but the last 2 days it doesn’t seem to do that anywhere near as much.

I am out of area for 2SM but I am always amazed about how good Laws sounds given his studio just looks like and office with an analogue mixer stuck in it - the brickwork visible in his photos should create a big reverb but doesn’t seem to.

I read a recent article about SRN upgrading 2MG for an FM conversion:

Again the new mixer is an analog ELAN - good as direct replacement for an old PKE and probably much cheaper than an AoIP mixer with all the extra costs like ethernet switches. Lack of remote management capability would be the main drawback but it’s probably only used for a breakfast shift anyway.

Nice to see SRN spending some $$$ on plant and equipment.

That’s an ELAN Eagle which is a digital console, although it does have a more analogue take on digital and lacks features common in other digital consoles such as AoIP.

Hmm, what would I do?

I’d still like to win a transistor, even though I hate filling out coupons, lol

Wish there was an option for more music shows hosted out of 2RE.

When that survey was done all music shows on 2RE would’ve been hosted locally, in fact I’d go as far as saying 2RE was 100% live & local then.

re the 2SM survey clipping.
I like their description of their contact telephone:
“2-Way Radio Phone:” 29-8241
Did they not have an old switchboard at 257 Clarence Street?
Well before my time in any case.

Oh yes, i was more thinking how I’d respond now.

It’s a shame 2SM didn’t do anything sooner - they could’ve played more music & spent less on talkback announcers with a more music/lighter talk format.

But they’ve now lost that to 2UE.

When Sam Galea created “Lite n’ Easy” music format in the late 1980s they were on a winner, problem is nobody realised.

Especially the listeners.

Over the last week I have listened to numerous SRN stations. It appears 95% of the callers are just allowed to rave on and on and on about absolute tripe. To coin the phrase “The lunatics have taken over the aslylum” I am probably spot on the money. I suppose if there was somone able to give them their medication it would allow SRN to play more music.

It was ahead of its time. Same with 1008 in Brisbane I wonder if they’d persevered a bit longer whether it would have taken off like the original Smooth FM format. Soft AC seemed to peak in US and Canada in the early to mid 2000s

There are reports that Bill Caralis, the owner of 2SM, has died.

Yeah, it’s been discussed over on the Super Radio Network thread!

I like Brent Bultitude on the weekend. I like George and Paul in the past, he is the first weekend show that I have enjoyed since their show. I wonder how he would go teaming up with George? I never really got into the replacements for George & Paul on 2GB. RIP Paul.
