Radio host apologises for Charlise quiz question
2SM Radio host Marcus Paul slammed
A Sydney radio host has apologised for a “completely inappropriate” giveaway quiz which featured alleged murder victim Charlise Mutten. The Daily Telegraph
G’day. Just jumping on - yes I’m currently off air due to a complete and utter brain fade on air that I have already and will continue to apologise for.
It wasn’t just me involved but as host I take full responsibility… and feel absolutely awful.
I just didn’t think - was busy and live on a fast paced show. No excuses.
Im not sure where it all stands at the moment.
I have suspended my socials due to nasty trolling some of which has been started by ex 2SM jocks with a grudge. He is at it again providing Bill’s personal email address to his cronies in order to have me sacked. I fear they may succeed.
One last comment, Again today the Daily Telegraph are running a bs story on it - two weeks after I apologised - and again replaying the offending content. Surely, this is hypocritical? Isn’t Jonathon Moran and the paper now exploiting the tragedy in the name of clicks?
Anyway, as I said. I’m sorry, I feel like shit, and it’s a hard lesson to learn so publicly.
I actually really like your show Marcus, I was streaming it daily since I last spoke. I really hope they don’t give u the sack, because you have one of the best presenting styles around, so you made a mistake… we all do it.
Even though I live in Brisbane, I really enjoyed waking up to you on my smart speaker… if anything does happen let all of us know where you land.
Please come back soon @Marcus_Paul. Your show - and believe it or not, 2SM - is filling the void left by 2UE. How long left until you come back?
It’s great hearing an alternate up-tempo news-based commercial AM brekkie show once again on the Sydney airwaves.
PS - BOG should consider networking Richard King into Sydney for 2SM Weekend Breakfast. He’s good, but not as hard-hitting as Marcus.
Stay strong @Marcus_Paul. We have all made some really stupid mistakes in our careers but I don’t see that this would be enough to see you leave.
Do you have a team of producers at 2SM? Very brave of you to take the full brunt being the captain of the ship. I think you’ll be ok.
It will all blow over.
Chris Smith on 2GB was far worse and nothing happened to him
If anything it proves you need more staff so you aren’t too busy to focus on editorial lapses like this. A proper producer would do the job, Bill should shell out for one after this lesson. Give him my number, I’m pretty cheap.
I understand you don’t have a producer, however, as the presenter, it’s vital that everything you say is accurate, not litigious, doesn’t impact on ACMA standards and not offensive (to the extreme), as in this matter.
You said it yourself “I just didn’t think” - “no excuses”.
Where it all stands, who knows, but trying to justify, explain and/or speak publicly to others behaviours regarding your ‘brain fade’ will do you more harm than good.
Marcus, when you’re on air, that is public broadcasting, you screw up, it’s in public. All of the ramifications which come from that are as a direct result of your actions. The reverse also applies when you get a great scoop with ensuing supportive publicity. You are always responsible for everything that comes out of your mouth, especially in a broadcast studio.
No matter how fast paced, busy/live etc - you are always the final censor of what you say on air.
The best you can do, right now, is to try and repair the damage at BOG privately, not publicly, for your future and your broadcast reputation.
relax champ. Marcus has apologised - and I think you’ll find a lot of people have said more or less the same thing to him. He gets it I imagine
Though I would think twice about contributing to this forum…it’s not exactly a Bill Caralis fan club around here.
Not that I don’t value Marcus’s input (it’s great to have real media professionals here), it’s just that you walk a very fine line. I’d hate to think that would give the powers that be more ammunition.
I can assure you there are many staff in positions of power within SRN who read this forum hence why I don’t comment all the time, and when I do it is always stuff I am sure can be released and/or is not going to bring the company into disrepute or get me into shit
Yeah OK.
However, there is still a responsibility of the broadcasting company to provide adequate
support and resources to ensure the code is
complied with.
Other broadcasters with far more experience
than me ( and resources) have also stuffed up.
Do you believe the same principles should apply
dear Journo. I know I have many enemies within
BOG. They should ask themselves what support they have ever provided me when doing a Network program.
Lots of complaining in the Network, but very little in the way of support.
So no, while you as a journo may have an hour to prep your scripted bulletins, often with assisandce and stories written for you.
Unlike most others I have not been.afforded that luxury. So come on then … Step up. Go for the gig. It’s all yours.
Now, you see Marcus, I was offering good advice. Did you read it properly, including the last paragraph?
But, here you are lobbing more blame all over the place, including your current/former employer.
You are compounding your problem with more assumptions and allegations
Marcus, the radio industry is small, as you know. Burning bridges publicly rarely ends well.
I suggest you read the last paragraph of my original post and actually think about it, then seek privately, advice from those you trust.
PS: Presuming I read news on the hour and those that do, have very little to do is also wrong. Broadcast Journalists also present talk/current affairs/lifestyle programs and have done so for many decades.
@Marcus_Paul please come back to 2SM Breakfast! Surely they’ll reconsider this dumb decision.
Sydney commercial AM radio has just gone back to where it was 2 years ago. Backwards.
Best of luck MP. Love your work on air and a terrific radio brain.
Also growing the show which seemed an almost impossible task, hopefully someone else can see the talents and picks you up soon.
No doubt 2GB are having a sigh of relief.
Time to Consider Relaunching as an Talk/Classic Hits Format.
Therein lies the problem with radio and TV broadcasting in Australia: If it wasn’t for the fact that you need to get a licence from the government to broadcast, which nicely keeps new entrants out, the existing media proprietors would have been driven out of business years ago by even poorly funded competitors. My experience has been media proprietors can burn all the bridges they like and have no fear of their target setting up a rival business just down the dial.
If it was Alan Jones he would have kept his job
2SM have axed Marcus.
@Marcus_Paul Really sorry to hear this. Hopefully bigger and better things in the future on radio for you.
