For me, it’d be much easier to listen on DAB than the awful AM music quality and associated AM problems.
Think it depends on the quality of the AM Radio ie how good the music sounds. I have an expensive shower radio which is now end of life, AM sounds good in my view. 2UE sounds good for a mono radio.
The best sounding AM radio I own is my old fashioned Sony Walkman. AM sounds quite rich. The others I have are rubbish, including the car. At least I have DAB in the car so no need to put up with it.
Agree. Only stopped using a Sony Walkman regularly in the last few years. Still in the car boot. Had it since the 1980s and replaced the headphones a few times but the sound and signal reception was superior to other pieces of junk I tried to replace it with even though it was battered and full of sand.
Probably asking too much, but here goes ,it would be nice to have song name and artist on DAB for 2CH.
You should know that 2CH on DAB in its current form only continues until contracts of a couple of (old 2CH 1170 AM) presenters come to a conclusion.
SEN are not in the music genre, 2CH DAB generates no revenue, it’s a necessary transition right now due to to above. It really is the ‘forgotten child’ of SEN for that reason.
Perhaps those that still listen, should look for an alternative.
A 2CH insider told me that in a lot of cases if you advertise on 2CH they chuck in SEN for Free. I wonder what the real story is
I am an occasional listener, don’t worry I have a backup plan .
I’d say that could work either way given the small amount of listeners both stations have.
and that was why SEN got rid of Classic Rock Radio and the digital DAB+ stations Koool and Aussie in Melbourne.
I decided to try and listen to 2CH again, not a lot has changed. It feels like less ads now. Still got voice tracking. Did not listen to Tim Webster yet, I think he might be live?
I think a number of mistakes SEN were made, 2CH had success in the first DAB ratings but the past 2 surveys have painted a more negative picture ;
The key mistakes were ;
-
Flicking over to 9A (From 9B) and having 2UE on the old station would of been a big issue. They should of done that earlier on, when they were still on 1170.
-
The messing around with 3-A and 4-A which reduces the reception especially when they want people to keep listening (DAB was the only terrestrial means).
-
The audio quality. In my view they should stuck to 64k as a minimum and not worry about SEN Melbourne into Sydney, I would even suggest remove SENTrack from DAB.
Even though the bar is set low, I think it has more life than 2UE with at least voice tracking during the day and a SMS line for request etc.
Surely SEN are just running through the motions with 2CH and will most likely pull the plug (in favour of focusing on sports stations/programming) once the current contracts for any remaining presenters expire?
A pity, because if 2CH was still on 1170AM I think we’d now be talking about an AM music station which would likely be outrating 2DayFM and Triple M (not that impressive by current standards of course, but I still think there’d be some at 2CH who’d be proud to outrate Sydney’s two original FM stations)!
The change of multiplex should’ve happened back in 2017 when 2CH broke away from the (then) Macquarie Radio Network family.
The biggest disruptor for DAB stations, is streaming. Whether it’s Spotify or iHeartRadio or all of the other sources available is the proliferation of a variety of formats. Many do the 60-80’s and much better than 2CH due to massive reach/resources.
It is sad to witness a heritage brand being tossed aside, however, right now, they’re simply going through the motions until the plug is pulled - which they really should do on a set date so a final, appropriate farewell can take place for once dominant home of “The Snob Mob”, “Beautiful Music” (which took it to number one) not to mention the cavalcade of broadcast legends who’ve graced the 2CH AM airwaves since its launch in February 1932.
Yep, I agree.
My suggestion for a final date for 2CH: February 15, 2022 - the 90th birthday.
Like with 2UE. Their 90th year was pretty much their final year as a full blown talkback station with half decent ratings.
It will be interesting when SEN realise the obvious their ratings in Sydney are not going to increase over 1%, have B-Grade Announcers nobody listens too and a C-Grade News Service. What to do?, try and sell out to someone with an ounce of common sense and walk away, bring back 2CH? Who knows
Or yet 2SM may merge their Format with 2CH with Sydney’s 1269 playing Music while 1170 plays Sport.
I doubt 2sm will change in the short to medium term. The format on 2sm is probably the most static out of all the stations. The most major change was John Laws in past 12 years? The breakfast show only changed because of Grant Goldman passing away (RIP).They did get some rights some footy, that’s the probably the biggest change I can think of. Oh yeah Takin Sport finishing at 6pm instead of 7pm.
Of course Carallis could bid for the 1170 frequency in a Fire Sale which I would imagine will happen more sooner rather than later
Trevor Sinclair announced this evening, as he signed off, that today was his last shift on 2CH!
