I don’t think I needed to buy my Grannie a digital radio as she wanted to hear the news on 2CH as well. The news bulletins on 2CH are now no good.

Tuned her into 2UE. The unfortunately thing is her eyes are not so good… She accidentally clicks over to FM, meaning she gets smooth FM. Smooth she said didn’t have good news bulletins.

This is her radio. It is actually a nice radio. Very simple but does the job.

Cherie Romano hasn’t been picking the music unless their MD has quietly ended employment.

David Burton has been scheduling music since April 2020:

And your Granny thinks 2UE news is good? A shadow of its former quality pre 2GB merger and years prior.

ABC news isn’t of the good quality it once was either.

No I think the news bulletins have gone bad since 2UE shutdown their newsroom. Radio news is a shadow of what it once was back in the 80s. The decline started on FM. Mike Carlton I remember complaining about the news on MIX 106.5 yet, about 5 years, before they use to have a great news service with Ross Symonds who use to read the news on 2UW and it was a good 10 mins in length for breakfast.

Long answer but its the only commercial news service, maybe on par with the super radio network news. She likes to have music on as well. Some argue newspaper and maybe TV news has declined as well. Is it too easy to blame the internet/social media and too much choice and it has become a commerical reality?

How good would it be if a big operator decided to buy some licences and do proper talk/music like Radio 2, I wish ABC did it with the Classic FM frequencies, but even a commercial operator would be great but likely would have to be AM.

I remember Clive Robertson getting complaints from listeners because they said he was talking too much when he did breakfast on ABC-FM, as it was called then.

Yeah 2SM,2UE could do this or even 2Day FM. I think the closest thing was Vega FM to try this out. From memory the news service was not the greatest when Vega started.

yes, even I. He tended to ramble on for long periods & then go off on a tangent right in the middle of his sentence & ramble on some more. I think he was the worst presenter ABC Classic FM ever had.

I think Nine Radio News is slightly better than Super Radio News and certainly a lot better than SEN News, but that isn’t really saying much.

Prior to the 2015 closure of 2UE’s newsroom, their product was probably about on-par with that provided by 2GB IMO. Maybe better newsreaders on 2UE but that’s about it really.

Can’t disagree that current day FM radio news isn’t great. Maybe Smooth & WSFM have somewhat listenable bulletins, but the rest are pretty bad!

As for the quality of Mix 106.5 news bulletins, before the relaunch of KIIS I don’t think there was a massive difference between the quality of it and WSFM News. These days though, I’d imagine that 106.5 bulletins are formatted pretty similarly to those on 2DayFM and Nova.

I think it’s a case of changing media priorities, fewer resources and lower budgets.

Absolutely agree. ABC news is piss poor too these days. I actually don’t get what they’re doing with ABC news, particularly on RN. You get a lead story on something national or international and then it’s straight into local car crashes and gun or stabbing crimes. It’s hardly what I expect on Radio National.

Absolutely!! I stream Radio 2 throughout the day at work and their news bulletins even at 1am are streets ahead of anything here. Live announcer in the wee small hours providing engaging content and a great mix of mainstream and adult alternative music… If only.

BTW would love to see this format replace Classic FM but I highly suspect ABC would screw it up by making the music too obscure and not allowing the announcers to be upbeat enough.

Too afraid of sounding commercial, some of their local radio regulars would work well like Libbi Gorr, Dave O’Neil and others like Jono Coleman etc. Decentralise it and have hosts from different cities but keep a national feed. Would be great.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. ABC would be afraid it would sound too commercial.

That’s why I love UK radio. BBC isn’t afraid to sound a bit commercial and the commercial stations can often sound a bit BBC…

Changing listener priorities too. It’s very easy to get news online so often you’ve heard the news before the radio tells you or you can easily do more research. Listeners don’t have the same need for it now, so don’t want it taking up too much time.

That made me think, maybe I should tune into 2rph as grannie can’t read anymore due to her aging eyes. Not sure if they have a news service.

They don’t, not an hourly one anyway.

Taking AIR News would be comprehensive but currently only airs on weekend mornings on Sky Sports Radio across metro Sydney and community radio in Campbelltown.

They have also updated their website slightly to include a line up that says “Stardust with Bob Rogers” on a Saturday night.

How so?

Maybe Bob has returned, but I doubt it…Just sloppy, whoever did the revised website probably has no idea who Bob Rogers is.
