2CH Sydney

That’d be their strategy to go head-to-head with 2UE.

By having an announcer voice-track 6am-midday weekdays, that’ll keep 2CH as relevant as what 2UE is these days.

… Time to ramp up the on-air line up at 9Radio Music stations …

Meanwhile, can anyone confirm whether or not GM Cherie Romaro will be continuing? Will she still be GM of 2CH? Will she become GM of 2CH and SEN? Or will she be gone?

Most importantly what will happen to this thread?! Will it disappear to the Digital Radio Content Thread. Or will it be the first digital only station to have its own thread ?

Well that’s very interesting to see that yes it is indeed back on again - certainly wasn’t at the time of my previous post.

I love this link. No FM right? I prefer to listen to AM mono radio online than some of the streams.

I wonder if 2ch’s contest line and feedback phone numbers will change

at the moment it is

Contest Line: 1300 13 1170
and
Feedback Line and Request Line for Sydney Tonight Live with Chris Kearn:
1300 14 1170

I’ll be in Sydney Wednesday to Friday so I’ll definitely be having a listen to the old and new

I’ve never understood how/why a station making such a loss has to have two 1300 numbers?

I’m sure once 1170 SEN launches, their new number will be the networked 1300 SEN SEN.

1300 numbers I don’t think are that expensive because AFAIK the local call component is paid by the caller? Most of their callers would be local?

It’s the shorter 13 numbers which have a lot more smarts behind the scenes that are :heavy_dollar_sign::heavy_dollar_sign::heavy_dollar_sign:

Absolutely correct when it comes to 10 digit 1300 numbers.

IIRC, there are three components to the cost:

  • number purchase - the actual number used to be bought at auction (which is triggered based on interest in the number). This meant that easy to remember numbers would normally cost more (eg 1300 123456). I don’t believe there is anything to prevent a pre-emptive strike such as ARN hypothetically buying 13 1019.
  • ongoing rental - the ongoing rental for the number, which depended on the number of digits as theoretically you are paying for all combinations of numbers below them. The less digits the greater the cost (hence numbers like 11 630 were initially replaced with 1300 36 1051). This is why 10 digit 1300 numbers are cheap.
  • phone calls - toll free (18xx) v local call (13xx) - clearly with toll free the owner is absorbing the call cost. And as @TelevisionAU points out - the more local your callers, the more affordable a 1300 number. Caveat: I’m not sure how that works however for mobiles - because I would expect the proportion of callers ringing from a mobile would be increasing.

It’s interesting 2ch isn’t announcing about moving to “dab” any more. Did thier switchboard get jammed with complaints?

I find it rather odd that there is no mention on the, somewhat outdated, NSW Council of Churches website https://nswchs.com/ that their main ministry, the Sunday religious programs on 2CH, has concluded.

I wonder how many complaints they got about SEN replacing 2ch on 1170 am on their feedback line 1300 14 1170?

I heard a clip advertising the feedback line, someone ringing where to buy a gas mask ? A bit of a strange clip. Why would you ring 2CH to find out where to buy a gas mask? Maybe I misheard it :).

Reminds me of the old SBS show “Feedback” which, because it was on immediately after Inspector Rex, was mostly filled with comments about Inspector Rex and requests to play Rex’s theme song.

Complete waste of airtime.

I am guessing there will be few lost listeners who listen to 2ch on 1170am wonder where 2ch went to tomorrow not knowing its on DAB+

So very true. But this is probably the strategy SEN wants. They’re probably hopeful that some current 2CH 65+ classic hits lovers will willingly want to listen to sports talk 24/7.

Hmmmmm…

Seems like a rather odd strategy to me. I would’ve thought it’d make sense to heavily promote the fact that 2CH is becoming a digital-only station to make way for SEN on 1170AM.

Even if SEN don’t want to promote the switch, it’s interesting how the broader Sydney media hasn’t picked up on the major changes about to hit 1170AM. Surely this is worthy of some mention (even if only a couple of paragraphs/30 seconds respectively) in the Herald, Telegraph and on commercial TV news?

Surely there wouldn’t be that much overlap between the listenership of 2CH and SEN?

I reckon most current 2CH listeners will be off to 2UE, Smooth 95.3 or WSFM tomorrow when they find out that sports talk has replaced the Classic Hits!

My prediction is that 2CH as a digital only station will have a limited life. I think 2CH will fail to rate and will not bring in enough advertising revenue to justify its existence, so it will be axed. Pacific Star has form - they axed the two music stations in Melbourne in what appeared to be, at the time, a move to cut costs, iirc.

How did those stations “rate”? Was it similar to 2CH? Yeah I agree with you, although it is nice to have a DAB station playing 60s and 70s music as the current trend is an obsession with the 80s and 90s on DAB ( And even FM to be fair ).

Just wondering as far as advertising on radio, if a change of format are there notification rules if suddenly it is on DAB only? Or would they hope the advertisers don’t notice .

Do people even know what DAB+ is? It’s fairly obscure. I only recently just got it on my new car. Before that never even had a digital radio at all.
