2CH Sydney

Supposedly younger people are making bigger purchases, houses, cars, having kids - kids products come into it. I agree it makes less and less sense as the economy works less for younger people than ever before.

My sweeping statement used younger to mean everyone younger than 2CH’s audience. There’s plenty of advertisers wanting to target the approx 50 demo who have more disposable income and make purchasing decisions for work.

The younger audience you refer to (18-30) despite having less are more likely to spend their entire paycheck on whatever will make them cool - and the brands advertising to them also want to be cool. Many also make poor choices in their advertising spend for the sake of looking cool. I get nervous whenever I speak to a brand manager under 30, yes, some are talented and know what they’re doing, but in many cases too much authority is given to people with too little life experience.

You raise a good point here. My original post had that in mind. But I get the vibe 2CH format is at dead end from a business perspective as it has been posted from others the current 2CH doesn’t make money (no matter it beats other music stations from time to time on the FM Band which should not happen  ). Sports is the answer to earn money for now.

You and me both - in many fields.

Listening to CH last night. Not that I listen to Ads a lot but it is interesting the ā€œadsā€, there is old fashion christian message be kind to others, then the next moment a gambling ad for SEN .

I don’t want to stereotype gamblers and SEN listeners as not being kind or not appreciating the christian like message we have heard on 2ch over the years, I just find it an interesting contrast as its like the old 2CH is slip sliding away (Simon and Garfunkel  ) as the gambling ads coming in but you can still hear a reminiscence of the old 2ch .

I don’t hear the Christian verse for a while on 2CH I think every 2nd hour before? Not heard it for a while. Kel Richards use to read it when at the station. I don’t recall 2CH having gambling ads or the Melbourne cup am I correct? As gambling addiction is a thing and I think with the church previously having a say in the station would have some say on ads and songs 2CH would play.

Bob Rogers has officially left the Airwaves after a Record 78 Years.

Am I the only one who’s surprised (and disappointed - especially when you consider how AJ’s departure from 2GB was treated) the wider Sydney media hasn’t done more coverage of Bob Rogers’ retirement from radio?

Probably.

Considering the owners are from interstate, their priorities probably lie on building a new 1170 SEN team/station.

ā€œOut with the old, in with the newā€ is likely to be their mission.

But I 100% agree and mentioned this earlier - that it is a little odd for Bob to only give one weeks notice that he is wrapping up his 78 year radio career.

Nobody really knows what is happening behind the scenes at 1170AM. Only time will tell once 2CH moves to DAB+ where all will be revealed.

Will current announcers remain?

Will advertisers stay on board?

Or will 2CH be a digital jukebox full of sporting ads ran as ā€œbonusesā€ across from 1170 SEN?

I reckon that will be it. It will likely be ā€œ2CHā€ in name only with just a playlist on shuffle with no presenters.

Bob Rogers doesn’t have much faith in 2CH being a success on DAB+, that’s why he retired. The Australian reports:

Which leads me to ask, how many of the other presenters are continuing on if they were asked to work for a couple of peanuts?

The Australian is also reporting that John Singleton is initiating a ā€œSave Bob Rogersā€ crusade and wants Bill Caralis to put Rogers on 2SM.

Where he can also work on a small salary and have a small audience :rofl:

I’m thinking just let the poor guy retire. People don’t live forever.

Always thought Bob and all other on air staff were finishing up on this long weekend ahead of clearing the AM band and CH heard solely on DAB+ when SEN begins.

Not the revenue now to support them, would be less when DAB+/online only for the medium term and quite likely, permanently.

On Bob and the stirring the pot by The Australian, @Brianc68 is yes, let Bob retire. 98 is more than a good innings. Perhaps he find radio keeps him going? Really, Bob needs a stimulating variety of interests and good health checks.

He’s only 93 (turning 94 in December). A mere whippersnapper.

Yes- when radio or anything else is all you’ve ever known, you lose your identity somewhat if you stop. It’s the same reason the Rolling Stones are still going. I’m sure the same applies to his rival Long Jaws as well.

He could always go to community radio and do what he wanted and take his pension.

In fact he could syndicate his show and a whole bunch of audience outside Sydney could hear him too.
