2024 STATE ELECTION
9NEWS QUEENSLAND TO HOST INAUGURAL LEADERS’ DEBATE
9News Queensland , the leading and most trusted news program for Queeslanders, will broadcast the all-important first Leaders’ Debate of the State election campaign, live from its Mount Coot-tha studios on Thursday, October 3, from 7.30pm AEST on Channel 9 and 9Now.
The one-hour debate will pit Labor Premier Steven Miles against Liberal National Party Leader David Crisafulli. As the election looms on Saturday, October 26, the debate offers voters a timely opportunity to hear the political leaders explaining their policies for the pressing issues at stake.
Nine Queensland will showcase the pivotal debate with an expert team delivering high-quality, analytical coverage.
9News Queensland’s Melissa Downes will steer the debate as the moderator, aiming for a dynamic and engaging exchange. There will be questions from the panel of 9News Queensland State Political Reporter Tim Arvier, 4BC Afternoons Presenter Sofie Formica, and Brisbane Times Editor Sean Parnell. Their collaboration and insight promises to extract crucial details from the two leaders and set the stage for the remainder of the election campaign.
As parliament adjourns for the election break, all eyes will turn to the campaign and this critical debate, which will provide voters with a clear view of Steven Miles and David Crisafulli’s vision for Queensland’s future.

This will be interesting.. Crisafulli has had nothing of substance to say so far bar pointing out current problems.
Miles is on the nose and has nothing to lose.
The winner of the debate and the election might be who loses least.
I wouldn’t think this debate will have too big a say in who wins the election.
It’s likely already won and done.
Exactly.
Crisafulli will win with no one knowing his policies.
Greens will do well and take votes from Labor… exactly what their leader who is ex-Labor with an axe to grind wants.
Miles will be decimated.
What do you mean nobody knows his policies?
He has a pretty consistent message. Youth crime, cost of living, housing, health. That seems to be what’s cutting through.
He’s just stating the problems with very little detail as to what he proposes to fix them.
I’d argue he’s not cutting through, people just feel Miles/Palaszczuk have been in power too long.

- doesn’t help that Miles hasn’t been the best leader.

It was seriously the biggest con job out tbh.
I’m surprised the commercials are even interested in state election debates - usually unless it is NSW, the only debates for elections are generally on Sky News, ABC (although I think they’ve stopped doing state TV debates in recent years, but still have many on radio), and commercial talk radio stations.
Probably some US debate excitement flowing through?
With Nine News hosting the debate it will give then an advantage over the competition who, if they want to show coverage will have Nine’s talent and watermark on the footage.
Would anyone else other than Sky or the ABC NC?
It could be hosted by the Courier Mail (or Brisbane Times) and run on-line/YT etc.
Probably the ‘fairest’ would be to be run by the QLD branch of MEAA. Then there could be journalist from all outlets - still could have a couple from TV to moderate.
I was talking more linear TV.

it could be hosted by anyone who offered to host it and go their act together go put a pitch in… and this time it was 9.

Doesn’t Queensland have a press-club?
In SA at the last state election, the only televised debate was held by the SA Press Club (ABC televised it) - was moderated by Stacey Lee (ABC Radio Breakfast presenter at the time).

Prior to that the ABC ran it, and in the past (Rann V Redmond) 10 did at, at 5.30pm for half an hour. They flew Hugh over to moderate!
Palaszczuk v Newman was run by the Courier Mail and broadcast on Sky… and she still won the election! Lol

Didn’t help that Newman ended up starting out being a ray of hope after many years of Labor, but became worse and worse as time went on.
