2020 US Presidential Election - Media Coverage

In 2012 7 aired coverage from CNN/NBC with Chris Reason anchoring from Perth on 7Two before going to the main channel shortly after 3PM AEDT when Obama won OH.

The flat Sunrise, The Latest & 7 News website logos look really good. However, the all red 7 News one doesn’t - the usual red/white combination works much better

As expected that NBC townhall was widely panned and an absolute train wreck. Probably means trump will win.

To be fair, thought Savannah Guthrie did a really good job questioning Trump and not letting him ‘steamroll’ her like he usually does with most other interviewers.

Yes I agree, I was more talking about the content of his responses.

Biden and ABC win the town halls. ABC averaged about 14 million viewers compared to NBC with 13 million (across NBC, MSNBC and CNBC).

When comparing numbers from 7-8 pm, ABC was ahead 14.1 million to 13.1 million. ABC’s town hall peaked in the final 30 minutes to over 16 million viewers.

Stunning defeat for trump who follows very closely to ratings.

Quite a ballsy move by CBS as this studio is almost directly across the street from ABC who has held their election coverage from Times Square (GMA second floor studio) since the turn of the century. ABC built a brand new studio space at their Uptown NYC studios and I’m assuming they’ll be based there for coverage which allows CBS to utilize Times Sqaure marquees for their coverage this year.

10 will now have coverage of the third debate on Friday from 12 - 1:30pm (AEDT), live in all markets. Program description in the EPG suggests they’ll be taking CBS News’ coverage.

This makes Seven’s decision to only show it live in AEDT states more bizarre…

Good to see this commitment to coverage. They’ll have three reporters over there with Hugh and Eamon being joined by Katherine Firkin. Combine this with access to CBS and they’ll do a decent job. Looks like they’ll have some sort of rolling coverage on Election Day.

Great but again, lots of effort put into something outside of prime time.

What’s the problem with that?

Nobody is watching their news brand. They sink millions into a news service that isn’t in prime time. It’s not a good ROI.

It’s good. But they send confusing messages, though. On one hand they cut news back time and time again. No online news presence. Only one linear TV bulletin a day. But then they splurge on stuff like this that will be covered by the other networks anyway. And because they have such a sporadic approach to news event coverage, nobody will watch it and so it will do nothing to boost the news brand.

Not criticising them for covering the election, but I just think it’s inconsistent with everything else happening around them with news. Do they want to be a serious news outlet, or not?

I agree with you but is this costing much? They’re using CBS and the reporters that are already on the books and were sent over there to cover it anyway.

10 really do send mixed messages and could do more even with their skeleton staff etc to expand their brand.

10 put an effort in 2016 to present the US Election under the banner of Studio 10
