2020 Ratings Predictions

I can’t seem to find the correct page to post this…

I would love to know the Adelaide ratings between 10 News First and 9 News at 5pm for the past week please?

Apologise if it’s not in the correct page.

Monday September 21
It will be a competitive night. I am afraid it won’t be a happy 200th episode for HYBPA due to a low lead-in and live AFL. The Block will be huge tonight.

Now we know who’s playing in this year’s AFL & NRL Grand Finals, how are we expecting the television ratings to go?

With two Victorian based teams in the Grand Final and viewers who’d usually watch the game at restaurants, bars and the MCG this year having to settle for a TV viewing experience, surely there’ll be record ratings in Melbourne for this year’s AFL Grand Final?! Whether the figures will be so high in other states where there are less social distancing restrictions currently in place, I’m not sure. Certainly I’m not expecting the South East Queensland ratings to be as high as they may have been if the Lions made it.

As far as the NRL Grand Final is concerned, it’s the Minor Premiers playing for their first premiership in 17 years against the competition’s most successful club of the last 10-15 years. There’s probably not quite the same emotion to the story as there was in 2016, but try telling that to Penrith Panthers fans!

Sydney has some restrictions when it comes to how many will be able to attend the match at ANZ Stadium, but NSW bars & restaurants are still operating albeit with social distancing measures. I’d probably still expect higher television ratings for this year’s NRL Grand Final than what you’d expect during a non-pandemic year though. It’s inevitable that there’ll be massive hype amongst the Sydney media for the Penrith Panthers, while the Melbourne Storm are reasonably popular in Queensland unlike either team who played for last year’s premiership. These factors could be enough to result in near-2016 ratings for NRL Grand Final 2020.

Nine News Sydney got 38k more viewers than Seven News Sydney on AFL Grand Final night last year…even though GWS played (and lost) that one.

This year with two Victorian teams in the AFL Grand Final…the actual match should receive OK ratings in Sydney but Nine will win the market at 6pm on October 24, when the minds of most residents in this metropolis are likely to be on the NRL Grand Final.

There are 6 more rating weeks this year.

Seven will win this week due to AFL, while Nine will win next week + State of Origin weeks.

Weeks predicted to win:
Nine: at least 4 more weeks to win
Seven: at least 1 week to win
The last week will be undecided yet.

Overall, Nine can say that they have won this year too.

A big week coming up for Seven, with Brownlow, SAS launch and the Grand Final… Will they succeed? Or flop hard?

Brownlow on a Sunday night, odd, but could make for a bonanza. I reckon the loyal audience (including Foxtel not having simulcast rights anymore) and Melbourne still being locked-down will offset any major drop in ratings because of the night change and increased competition. I think there’s a lot of interest to see how this new set-up because of coronavirus will go, it’s been well promoted too.

Melbourne will still do 500-600k+ (which alone will win the night big for Seven), Adelaide and especially Perth could be interesting though. Brisbane may be well up due to Lions star Lachie Neale firm favourite to win.

The Block will be affected in Melbourne particularly.

Seven News and Nine News should be low, due to 10’s Bathurst, which will also be interesting.

Huge… Duh.

Monday October 19

A very rare Friday night coming up with no sport (unlike winter with AFL and NRL and much of summer with cricket and tennis), could be a ‘battle of the lifestyle shows and movies’.

Nine have an AFL-themed telethon again in those markets though, interesting to see if it has any impact.

Calm before the storm as I like to call it (no pun intended ), with two days of Grand Finals ahead!
