2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

Andrew “Andy” Maher?

Who I’m sure you’re trolling, like many, despite being a veteran in his own right and once popular as host of BTG and AFL boundary with Christi Malthouse

Some would say a sports doyen.

News and Fairfax should pull their money if Beattie won’t let them report the event.

Let’s call it part Seinfeld reference and part “I genuinely have no idea who he is”

Not a fan of BBL cricket either?

Rob Astbury has been referred to as a ‘sports doyen’ also. Living on the Gold Coast and working at Ray White Broadbeach with many listings, he was found dead in bed by his boss in the past week. Hadn’t reached 70. Very sad.

Latest promo starring Cate and Bronte Campbell, with Glasgow Games footage projected on various Gold Coast buildings.

As posted elsewhere, News Corp and Fairfax are boycotting the Games over a rights dispute even though they are both sponsors. Which could leave The West Australian as the only major Australian paper covering the event.
It is very disappointing given there were no accreditation problems when Melbourne hosted the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Nine was showing it. These kinds of disputes for major sporting events are becoming common in recent years as the organisers put priority on TV coverage.

Looks like agreement with Seven can be blamed for the boycott…

Commonwealth Games: News Corp won’t cover Gold Coast spectacular over digital rights dispute

The decision comes after the parties failed to reach a deal to relax restrictions around the use of pictures and video from events online.

The restrictions compel publishers to obey a 30-minute delay for broadcasting content collected at news conferences and limit digital news bulletins to a maximum of 60 seconds a day across no more than three bulletins a day. The restrictions imposed by the Commonwealth Games Federation are to protect the TV rights of the Seven Network.

Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation chairman Peter Beattie said there was nothing GOLDOC could do to change the news access rules.

“They can only be varied between Seven and News, Fairfax and AAP,” Beattie said.

“Our hands are tied. We’re not party to the agreement.

More to do with news websites deciding they are apparently allowed to upload sports highlights

In 2010 News Corp partnered with Ten to deliver highlights of Sochi Winter Olympics on websites of Herald Sun, Daily Telegraph etc. Unless a similar arrangement with Seven can be sought, print reporting on the Commonwealth Games will be much affected and the public will be the loser.

It seems that News Corp will be unable to use the Commonwealth Games content that The West Australian will be publishing on their website (I’m guessing this, but it is a reasonable guess based on the news stories), despite News and The West Australian having a content sharing agreement.

Fairfax story on Seven West purchasing The Sunday Times, last year:

I think the only way to prevent the rights dispute from happening again, is that News Corp and Fairfax should talk to Seven, Nine and Ten to sort out the problems and reach a compromise on video and audio broadcast, before the networks bid to show the 2022 Commonwealth Games, and before Seven shows the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Isn’t that what they have just been doing but couldnt reach a compromise?

No, News Corp held talks with Gold Coast organising committee (GOLDOC) but not with Seven.

Based on restrictions imposed by Seven to keep content exclusive to them.

Commonwealth Games Federation CEO David Grevemberg has steadfastly ruled out relaxing tough rules around the online use of pictures and video at next year’s Gold Coast Games, but admits those rules may need to change for the 2022 event at Birmingham.
