10daily

10daily is closing.

Wow, that’s completely out of the blue.

Sad news. A lot of good talent out of work as with Buzzfeed News’ closure, though I could never tell exactly what audience they were targeting.

Think Pedestrian and Junkee have the youth audience to themselves now really, no matter how much money Nova/Illyria insist on putting into GOAT (which is a thing that somehow exists still). 9Honey must do well among female audiences you’d think, perhaps the TV tie-ins help?

10 being left without an online news presence yet again. I wonder what this means for them in this space, surely they have to have something at least?

An expensive project, just after it’s second birthday. I guess the writing was on the wall when it wasn’t even acknowledged by the network at all last week.

I actually noticed earlier today that Lisa Wilkinson had removed any reference recently to 10 daily from her twitter bio, a quick check of her Instagram account just now shows the same.

Also this, “More redundancies to follow”

Pedestrian will be the last one standing IMO, Junkee seems to have really fallen away in the last 12 months.

Disappointing, but part of me expects CBS called time on it early due to COVID, 10 have always had a real challenge with making the most of their online presence and while 10Daily wasn’t performingly terribly I doubt it was making any money.

The other approach you could take is to fold some of 10Daily’s reporting into MTV News. Wouldn’t be any cheaper, mind, and perhaps a less profitable exercise to begin with :man_shrugging:

That is so unexpected. Why? As an alternative, 10Daily could have merged with 10play so it would have become a one-stop website for news, lifestyle and program catch-up like Nine’s website. 10 could have its news reporters filing longer stories for the website, expanding from their video reports.

EDIT (includes a statement from 10):

Very sad news indeed, I know one of the reporters from WIN NEWS Central West gained a job as a 10 Daily video producer right after the WIN newsroom closed down. Very sad.

With all these closures of predominately free news websites, it wouldn’t overly surprise me if sometime in the next year or so we see (at least) Nine, ACM and News Corp come together for a major “To support the future of Australian journalism, please support and subscribe” advertising campaign.

Well said.

If I’m not mistaken, 10 Daily was positioned as the main news website for the network (including plugs during TV news bulletins for a while - not sure if it had been much recently) so one wonders what lies ahead for the online/digital side of 10 News First.

Not having an historically strong online presence for news (compared to the likes of Nine and the ABC who’ve been in the game for over two decades) hasn’t really helped though!

Some IT and social media employees would be kept on to continue running Network 10’s streaming services, but dozens of staff would be let go, including online reporters.

From 10

“Network 10’s digital media strategy is evolving to capitalise on our momentum and match the new global operating model. That means an increased emphasis on streaming services and social media,” a spokesperson for Network Ten said in a statement.

“Over the past two years, 10 Daily has established a strong presence and a loyal following, thanks to a passionate and hardworking team producing great content. We are grateful for their efforts to drive that success.

“As a result of the strategic change, however, 10 Daily will cease to exist as a standalone website. Some of the 10 Daily roles will remain. Some of the 10 Daily content will also transfer to 10 Play and our social media brands.”

I would’ve amalgamated all 10’s digital assets and just called it 10.com.au

Well, they’ve got that wrong.

I’d say it’s a minor error if it is. According to 10 Daily’s Josh Butler, who appears to be losing his job, a lot journalists, editors, video editors, and social media staff are losing their jobs.

It’s always fascinating to watch the stories spin on news like this.

Interestingly, The Age’s story on 10 mentions this too:

In April, 10 Daily attracted 4 million unique visitors. Network sources said the website had exceeded its traffic targets and grown its readership during the pandemic.

One would hope they would bring back Ten News web site where you can watch the latest (news reports) and read the latest news and breaking news for those who consume online.

Very sad indeed to see this go, I did like, it gave me alternatives and it wasn’t bad it was sleek in terms of website design and articles were well written.

What’s the spin and what’s your counterspin?

Fact is, the operation’s shuttered. A number of people are definitely being let go and if anyone has been retained, we haven’t heard about it. The site had promising metrics but the company has opted to focus on streaming. That’s all from Ten comms and staff. The news objectively sucks.

Setting that aside, I’m guessing CBS gave Ten a goal for cuts - everyone is in this environment - and Ten, having little relative fat to cut in the first place, did this.

Just incredible that in 2020, As the youngest network : 10 still can’t seem to expand successfully beyond broadcast or catch up

10 All Access is dead.
10 social media has extremely low penetration and even lower engagement
And now, no online news presence
