Video wall not playing nice during the introduction of the bulletin back to normal after the first story

They seem to increasingly be not doing the zoom-in with music after each commercial break. Which is a shame, I enjoy that.

Oh dear they did this once before for years and it always bothered me when they stopped doing it. But I hardly watch 1 news now anyway until they start giving us te reo lessons.

Absolutely :100: Agree, Greetings yes, but sentences that have nothing to do with delivery of the product to viewers is unnecessary, Newshub is only just slightly better, for now.

I appreciate the use of our languages, I also feel that using Maori words without being able to supply the context or translation does make it difficult to understand at times but I try make an effort to understand what is spoken where I can.

What an awful take.

Yes, some appalling racism here.

I don’t see how it’s racist?

Calling one of the official languages of this country “foreign” because you don’t like it is most certainly racist.

Any further racist dog whistling in this thread will result in a lengthy posting holiday, final warning.

Jenny Suo back on Tonight for Monday 28 June. I note the bulletin was presented entirely from the desk.

For who? No one has received a first warning?

Te reo is an offical language of this country sure cool, however what irritates most people is that Maori people are not even 18% of the make up of this country and roughly only 3% of them can hold a conversion in Te reo… so I think viewers are finding it a little more patronising than being of a racial ideals.

Edit: I also think it’s insulting to just assume what they’re saying if they’re about to tease a break or what ever, I’d rather know what they saying therefore we can learn from it correctly.

There you again

Hahaha okay so funny how my dads side is maori and my mothers side is Hungarian but I’m racist. :joy::joy::joy::joy:

Ah the classic “I’m not racist, my relative / one of best friends is [insert minority ethnic group name]” line, as deployed by all good racists.

Please stop. Brandishing terms about the place isn’t helpful and neither is picking on one another.

The point being raised, I think, is the need for subtitles for greetings and teases in the bulletin. I don’t think that’s an unrealistic idea.

Te Reo wasn’t (and probably still isn’t) common where I grew up (here in NZ), and I wouldn’t mind seeing more subtitles for this too, although I’m not sure how much is ad-libbed (it may not be so easy to implement without it being scripted).

You’ve got to remember, people who grew up pre-2000 had little exposure to Te Reo, especially beyond metropolitian areas and away from Maori strongholds (like the East Coast, for example). Te Reo on the 6pm news is the first broad daily exposure many people have had… it’s like the National Anthem, it will take time for people to firstly get used to it, and secondly begin to understand what is being said. But that is the starting point… from there people can develop their understanding of the language(s) on Maori TV, sister-channel Te Reo, Iwi Radio and then educational offers. It’s a start, just accept that.

No more divisive comments, please.
