I can hear 2RPH Wollongong here most of the time ('the ‘E’ of Bungendore is just visible on Ant’s map ). It mainly comes up via aircraft scatter, though. VOX FM is stronger and I can’t hear Kix Country 105.3 at all; the latter is almost certainly on vertical pol as mentioned.
The direct shoot up the coast to the eastern suburbs is probably more than what that map plots, too. After all, you could watch WIN4 with a coathanger in parts of Maroubra and Coogee.
2RPH would definitely travel much further up the coast as the map shows rural grade 54duBV coverage up the coast towards Sydney. Not car coverage. It would obviously suffer severe CCI from Radio 50+.
I am certain that Kix is vertical, 2RPH is definitely mixed and if omnidirectional would be on a separate antenna from Vox. Vox is 2KW North / South and 500W towards the west and Robertson.
I would not be surprised if 2ST at the Gib is vertical too. I can completely null the signal to receive 2KKO even with the fm omni pointing south. If I flip the antenna on it’s side I receive Kix faintly, and 2ST in stereo and with RDS.
Maybe 2ST and Highlands fm share the same antenna, Highlands fm is licenced for Vert polarity only. Music fm is definitely mixed. I can receive it stronger then 2ST and Highlands fm with my horizontal fm antenna, and Music fm is the lowest powered of the three.
Wollongong Radio ratings have been released and no surprises i98 wins again across all shifts.
The new Breakfast, Drive, and Nights on Wave fm since last survey have failed to take listeners from i98.
i98 wins all demographics except 65+ where Wave is a head of i98. ABC Illawarra wins this demographic .TBH Wave sound younger then i98 so I am surprised that they continue to do well in the older demographics.
Power fm and Wave fm sharing the same playlist also seems to be backfiring with both stations loosing listeners to i98.
The Edge / Cada is also included in this survey with a -0.5 decline from 1.2 share points to 0.7. I think these figures are probably more the transition from the Edge to Cada then a full survey of Cada.
This surprises me, I thought they would steal/bring over some audience. Seems it has done the opposite. Not looking good for Wave, I’m sure they are paying much more for all these new shows.
The problem seems to be that i98 is so strong and owns the AC / Hot AC market that Wave fm can’t compete. The market probably sees it as an imitation of i98.
Also if the thought was there to put both Wave and Power fm on the same log to bring listeners across from Power fm to Wave fm, has also backfired.
I think Wave fm might find more success if they skew older and take the 2ST log and focus on an older audience. This would add more variety to the Wollongong market. 2ST is not included in the Wollongong survey, and does not get into Wollongong as well as Power fm does, so sharing of logs would not be such a big issue.
Power fm can continue to take Waves existing log and Random 20 Countdown which appeals to younger listeners, if you look at the demographics of Power fm, 10-17 is the demographic where their share is the highest.
Going off those figures taking a log similar to Snow / Eagle fm would probably be best for them.
Agree Wave should skew older, mop up a locally untapped audience.
The other major problem for Wave is a lack of resourcing. Grant Broadcasters continually starved it. ARN need to invest more in restoring the future of Wave.
Also, a big loss to lose @Deano as programmer. The network had a real asset in him there. I don’t blame him changing roles for more time to enjoy family.
Goulburn has reasonable reception of ABC local radio. Canberra 666 AM / 90.3 FM from the ABC Central West/ 97.3 ABC Illawarra. I was in Marulan on Monday it was the best ABC station, good reception. Be interesting to hear what @dxnerd’s reception is like of 97.3 FM (with the current issue).
Also on the Central Coast I wonder if Lake Macq FM 97.3 is getting further south now?
Interesting it takes the feed from the central west according to the URL above. Yet it is highlighted the 97.3 FM affects people in Goulburn. I wonder why they don’t take the feed from ABC Illawarra?
Also when did 94.1 ABC Local radio in Bathurst come on air? I swear it wasn’t there when I was last there maybe like 8-10 years ago now.
94.1 serves Portland/Wallerawang, not Bathurst. It’s been on since the days when deep snowfall was a regular occurrence at its transmitter site. Received permanently aiming west from Oatley; it’s a tropo only signal here in Bungendore. There is also 92.5 ABCRN from the same site (Garlands Hill, on the Sunny Corner side of Portland).
From here ABC Central West NSW - ABC Radio. Not sure how well from Portland 94.1 gets into Bathurst. From memory I just used 549 AM.
Just a quick edit here. According to the https://reception.abc.net.au/. 94.1 FM does not cover Bathurst. I think its mistake unless they have added a repeater in Bathurst
Haven’t been to Bathurst in a while but I think it struggles there; 549 is a much better proposition. Garlands Hill is just on the east side of the GDR so signals from there would be attenuated in Bathurst by the Sunny Corner/Yetholme crest. That’s why 92.5 can be used right next to 92.3 2MCE; this alone is proof that the Garlands Hill site isn’t meant to cover Bathurst.
RE: 97.3 reception “issue” . I can still get ABC Local radio 97.3 FM at Pennant Hills. It isn’t obvious although I found myself tuning into 549 AM / 738 AM last Thursday night (given no 702 coverage) on my Sony “shower analog radio” when I was listening to the footy for a score update. Overall for me similar strength to i98 FM now that i paying attention. Seems to be a bit weaker as it did seem stronger previously.
How is your reception down there @dxnerd ? Do you notice any great difference?
Also re 97.3 ABC Illawarra … still coming through loud and clear as usual on my Pure One Mini here in the Blue Mtns. Regular listener especially Saturday mornings with Mark Matthews.
