Win could have actually averted much negative publicity if they just ‘downsized’ the Mildura bureau and broadcast the Bendigo / Swan Hill region bulletin into Mildura instead.
I don’t understand why the Sunraysia had to of gone from having a full 30 minute bulletin to the next day having nothing, surely a better option would of been to keep 1 reporter based in the region and have them report the odd story within the Bendigo news and they could of kept their own separate weather segment. Our local news is often padded out with stories from all over the state anyway so replacing them with a few items from Mildura I don’t see how people from Bendigo would complain or even notice. Their would of still been some negative reaction in Mildura but would of been more acceptable than airing ACA
If you give viewers nothing for a while they’ll be more accepting of the scraps you throw them later.
I’d rather they just be honest to the viewers and run a short update with Mildura specific reports and weather, as they do in SA - rather than making people sit through 30 minutes of Bendigo news to get the three items relevant to them.
Posted on Facebook by Hannah McEwan, WIN have been shooting news team promos earlier this week. From what I can gather, this is the just the team of presenters, journalists, cam ops etc based on the Sunshine Coast.
Their is a lot of areas and towns that are in that situation or worse, Swan Hill gets a reporter sent our way roughly every 3 to 6 months. Maybe because I’m accepting of it but I would rather sit through 30 minute of Central Victoria news than 30 minutes of a reality show or ACA to get a few news items that are local to me. I find Prime serves our area better for local news but I hate having to records hours of crap television every night to get to the noodle updates. I am assuming Prime still does Mildura specific noodle updates if so I know what I would rather be watching
Well I’d certainly think such a short update should air during the main Nine News to avoid that problem of finding it - rather than/as well as during prime time.
If they don’t want to lose the ad time, they should pre-empt the weather block - as the news could easily include a more relevant local forecast in it.
Sophie Ryan filled in for Natassia on WIN News Townsville tonight. I’ve never seen her before personally.
First time presenting I believe. Good to see they’re training up some of the other reporters to be fill in presenters.
Will be very interesting to see what happens to the 20 or so local editions of WIN News if WIN teams up with Ten.
I would think Wollongong (WIN’s hometown) and Canberra would almost certainly keep local news. And Sunshine Coast. Other cities? Who knows.
I would be surprised really, if ANY of the WIN bulletins survive for long at all, under a TEN affiliation.
But I would think a Southern Cross Nine (or whoever) would reinstate them (with a new name), but at what time? Not sure that they would go for 7pm though.
I disagree, as a matter of pride for Wollongong and Bruce - I can’t see them axing the Gong local news. And they would really piss off the pollies in Canberra who decide media reform WIN wants if they axe the Canberra news. Sunshine Coast is a booming city. So, I think it’s a safe bet those 3 will stay.
Also, the whole reason WIN is talking to Ten is it’s looking for a better deal. Nine wants up to 45% of WIN’s revenue - a Ten contract would likely afford WIN a much better financial situation - so even though rating would drop - they ay have some extra saved money to keep the local news going.
I’m more interested in what’ll happen to Win News Canberra if Nine buys Win or there’s a merger.
Considering the size of Canberra, could Nine invest in it and rebrand it as Nine News Canberra? Wouldn’t be hard to do what they’re already pumping out in Darwin, and Canberra is a much bigger and wealthier market.
The proposed legislation states that current local news services must be retained if a merger goes ahead. Thus if Nine/WIN merged or bought each other out - the 30 minute local news in Canberra must stay. By law.
And if Nine merged with WIN, I am certain it would be rebadged 9 News Canberra as a combined one hour news at 6.
Canberra is the wealthiest city per capita in Australia and has high news viewership due to the government and education sector there. Also very attractive demos to advertisers.
I’m sure Nine would want to be in the news game there. Plus they already have a studio and news exchange in Canberra.
And the law requires the merger company keep existing services anyway
You mean Parliament House? I’d assume, like the ABC, the the ‘local Canberra news’ would be a pretty separate operation.
I predict that come July one, the WIN news bulletin will close in wide bay, Albury, orange, Wagga Wagga, and maybe Rockhampton and Toowoomba, not sure about Townsville or cairns.
I get the impression WIN will save face and keep the bulletins going through to the end of the year (maybe a little longer), then axe the lot of them and move to noodle updates.
If they kept WIN News, my bet is it would be shown at 6pm in place of Family Feud.
What will happen if SCAv says it’s not financially viable to reopen Canberra, Townsville or Bendigo newsroom, what will WIN do then?
Personally, I think that the Illawarra, Canberra and Sunshine Coast bulletins (surely they would be WIN’s three biggest markets?) might have a decent chance of surviving while the other markets will probably have their full bulletins axed in favour of a SC10-style “news update service” as quickly as possible.
What I think is almost certain after June 30 if WIN News survives: A complete branding relaunch of WIN News to remove all traces of the Nine-style branding (graphics, set, theme music, etc.) in favour of a Ten-style look and feel.
Even if SCA starts as channel 9 from July 1, it will take time to re-etart the Townsville and Bendigo newsroom and SCA may say it’s not viable to do so. They said in the mid 1990s and early 2000s it wasn’t viable to keep the Townsville and Bendigo newsroom running.
Interesting times indeed…
