WIN News (2015-Feb 2025)

If you had three local bulletins in different time-slots… yes! but not against one another.

2 months wasn’t really giving the market enough time to decide. News viewing habits can take months or years to adapt to new or different timeslots. And also how aggressive was WIN being in promoting the 5.30 news? Did people know it was there?

I watched more of WIN News in the last two months than in the previous few years, even including the Peter Hughes era which I didn’t think was that bad but I had been listening to him on ABC Radio for many years before that.

Promo

That promo underscores just how bad WIN is at marketing and promoting it’s news product. The angle and copy of the promo os so rigid, and does not sell the story at all. Watch the promo, listen to the copy… it’s all information. Tells you the story - rather than sells the story - and the language is so formal, and clunky - nothing about it feels exciting.

TONIGHT ON WIN NEWS / FOR THE FIRST TIME IN CANBERRA’S HISTORY / AN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT WILL LAND AT CANBERRA AIRPORT TOMORROW / AND WIN REPORTER HARRY FROST, IN ON BOARD THE SINGAPORE AIRLINES FLIGHT, SHARING THE HISTORIC MOMENT / IT’S AN INITIATIVE THAT HAS TAKEN ALMOST TWO DECADES / AND WIN NEWS HAS BEEN THERE ALL THE WAY KEEPING YOU INFORMED / A WIN NEWS EXCLUSIVE - TONIGHT AT TOMORROW NIGHT AT

It’s all information, no sell, no tease, no marketing, nothing to make me want to watch. And it drags on for 30 seconds. The same promo could be 15 seconds and play twice as often as get seen my twice as many people

When it should be something like:

CANBERRA IS READY FOR TAKE OFF!

ONLY WIN NEWS IS ON BOARD CANBERRA’S FIRST INTERNATIONAL SINGAPORE AIRLINES FLIGHT!

WHAT’S ON OFFER? WHAT AMAZING TRAVEL DEALS THIS DOES OPEN UP FOR YOUR FAMILY?

AND WHAT WILL BE CANBERRA’S NEXT INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION?:

FIND OUT! WIN NEWS TONIGHT AT 6

They just don’t get ANYTHING at win

How about? “This plane left Singapore with a WIN News reporter and you won’t believe what happened next”

I think the background music would make a pretty decent theme. Much better than what they’ve turned Cool Hand Luke into anyhow.

That’s not even accurate.

So it’s perfect for WIN News then?

While I agree, the ratings must’ve been so dire (also see: the Ten News evolution of 2011) that WIN felt that they had no choice but to change the schedule after only two months.

I have no doubt that WIN would’ve been receiving the ratings in much more detail than what RegionalTAM puts on their website for public consumption and made changes to their news schedule in Tasmania based on that.

A sign that a TV news promo producer probably should be working in advertising, if you ask me…

@SydneyCityTV promos and advertising are the same thing

That promo gave me everything I needed to know - 30 second wrap of a 1.20 pkg.

Why not even “How your next international trip is about to get easier. A win news exclusive”

Basic tease, but far out, promote the story and make people want to tune in, not tell them 24 hours before.

Amen @Newsviewer - it wasn’t a promo. It was a story.

Sounds like an ACA knockoff. It’s a news bulletin for god’s sake.

You can do better than that.

@Aurora No different to the promos 7 and 9 run for 6pm news. They are promos to get ratings.

@EyewitnessTV But Tasmania’s have shown they want a bulletin with local state and national news all in one. Look at how SC dominates. ABC News too. That is the formula Tasmanias want and like.

If WIN is to compete they need to offer that.
They did at 5.30, and look how that turned out. They should never have stuffed around with moving it to begin with. Blind Freddie could see the mistake they were making in doing so. If they wanted the local, national and international format they should’ve left it 6pm with Ten News as the lead-in rather than dropping it and stuffing up the flow. But now they’re back to ‘what’s old is new’ with the state-wide format returning after a decade to try and turn around their fortunes.
True, but I don’t think Tasmania can sustain two local newscasts competing against each other at 6pm. The market just isn’t big enough.
It’s big enough. WIN simply don’t help themselves with stupid decisions one after the other. Constant chop and change certainly doesn’t help things. Look to SC, they have been very consistent with what they do for many years (from presenters to the format etc etc.). Meanwhile over at WIN, well, it’s a basket case to say the least…
True. I must admit, even though I didn’t think it’d last overly long in that state, they did pull the trigger quicker than I originally thought they would. That in itself tells you the ratings were THAT diabolical and they had to act rather quickly. Seems another example that WIN are just throwing sh*** at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Anyways, just watching back last night’s news and WIN have literally turned their news into one promo. There was a “Special Interview” with Georgia Love talking about her time on ‘The Bachelorette’ and what’s in store for the coming weeks, and for people to tune in to see it all unfold! This took up around 5 minutes of the bulletin. Seems WIN have fallen further than I thought. Must be struggling for ‘real local news’.

Look who’s in town! I sat down with the #Bachie Queen herself, @GeorgieALove, to talk all things love. See what she has to say tonight @ 6 :rose:

I’m eagerly anticipating what the next interview will be! :yum:

Just noticed this on their Facebook

Q:

A:
Hello, WIN News is now at the new time of 6pm. TEN Eyewitness News airs from 5-6pm, and our fully Tasmanian bulletin will follow straight after. Thank you for watching
And another comment elsewhere.

What are you playing at WIN? Are you trying to tell your viewers something… like not to bother to tune into your news. Quit moving it already otherwise I’ll be changing channels!
@TelevisionAU “And also how aggressive was WIN being in promoting the 5.30 news? Did people know it was there?”

The promotion run of the changes were and are still on high rotation, so this isn’t the issue. 5.30 local news was too early for most people.

The issue may be WIN Tasmania’s overall ratings.

Since the affil swap WIN has dropped from the #2 station in Tasmania to the #4 station in the latest survey.

 1. Southern Cross
 2. ABC
 3. Nine (TDT)
 4. WIN

Check it at Regional Tam website

An issue for WIN News Central West tonight. After ten NEWS, the title card starts playing then pauses for about 10 seconds, goes black (3sec) then back to the title card and after 5 seconds starts playing
