Wow. Amazingly to think that in some respects, regional broadcasting has actually gone backwards in 52 years!

I didn’t watch WIN News as I knew it would be usesless. Apparently they had a brief mention of the fire during the 6:00pm news, according to a couple of comments I saw on Twitter. Nine led with the fire as the headline and a brief story, went to the story about the China virus, then went back to the fire with a live cross to their reporter on the scene. It was much better than WIN’s reportedly meagre mention.

There seemed to be an issue with the weather segment in Canberra last night. It didn’t play out, instead after the final commercial break, the scenic loop played (with the WIN News bug) and then The Project started.

Former WIN News presenter, Geoff Phillips, has been named as Wollongong’s Citizen of the Year tonight.

It will be interesting to see if he makes a cameo appearance in tomorrow night’s bulletin, after his somewhat strange low key departure from the network last month.

Something not quite sitting right with me about they way his departure was handled, compared to the huge fuss they’ve made about the departure of Tanya Dendrinos.

That same issue popped up in Tasmania as well.

That sceneric loop give us bad memories for the time when Regional WA didn’t have time to finalise a new Nine affilate, so they just aired that with a banner covering up the “location” info. This was the first known broadcast of this loop, although the ambient music had been playing underneath the WIN Network placeholder slide at this time.

It appears that Jared Constable has done an on-camera interview with Geoff, so I’d imagine that it’ll be shown on WIN News Illawarra tonight:

I think they did it differently cause Geoff was retiring whereas Tanya was moving. But it was pretty much the same, they had a story fro Geoff on his history at WIN.

I dare say an iconic presenter leaving the network after 30+ years warrants a bigger send off than a reporter/ recent weather presenter who has been at the network for less than a third of that time.

That would be like not giving Brian Henderson a farewell mention.

Agreed.

Unless Geoff didn’t want a big deal made out of his retirement (in which case, fair enough I guess), WIN News really should’ve been going all out with “Geoff’s Final Week/Night” promos and reaching out to former colleagues for farewell messages!

Not even close, but to be fair you would have been a toddler when it first aired.

Definitely been around longer than that.

WIN used to run idents back in 2005/6 featuring similar scenic footage across their broadcast areas

From memory the scenic loops also used to run in the early days on WINHD when HD content was lacking.

Similar versions under the ‘Part of the WIN Territory’ banner used to air in the early 90’s.

Love those idents. They’re probably my favourite ones from the WIN/Nine box era.

I need to clear up how WIN are still using the 2006 Nine News theme:
In 2006, as part of Nine’s infamous stripping of the dots, they choose to use a new arragment of Cool Hand Luke for their news bulletins that took away the most well-known elements. As WIN were still affilated with Nine at that time, they obviously adopted it for their local news however their version had an longer intro before cutting to the regular National Nine News theme.

By 2008, Nine had returned the dots to their logo and starting using a proper re-arrangment of the 2001 theme, which is still used today. WIN continued to use it for as long as they liked, and they still do fittingly enough

I don’t get why WIN can’t use their closing theme!

Because they rely on people confusing with Nine. Even years later some MS members have said their parents/relatives still think WIN is part of Nine.

It’s ridiculous!
