Slightly off topic but when I worked at a Supermarket I felt very frustrated with what I perceived as everyone judging everything I did or said based on the type of job I had as if this defined who I was as a person. I felt compelled to tell people I was a trumpet teacher (which I did for a few years but earned very little money from) or that I was a university student (which I initially dropped out of after a year but went back partially because I thought it elevated my social status in the eyes of others).

I still feel that as a society we sort people into their relevant social classes by focusing on their job when there plenty of reasons why people might be doing a particular job when they are capable of doing many different things but they are restricted by the circumstances around them.

Due to the nature of my current job I feel it unwise to say anything too specific on a media forum like this but I’m sure if you read through my comment history you could figure it out.

Broadcast technican since 2000. Electronics technician since 1971. Component level repairs, valves, semiconductors, smd, large smd. Consumer electronics, two way then into broadcast.
Trained on Marconi school of wireless text books and real teachers, then school of practical real world, mistakes and experience.
Old grumpy and spose that allows me, a senior, semior status.
Love the job and not going anywhere soon!

Obviously this has changed since my original post as it’s 6 months since I left my job at the acrylics factory where I worked for 29 years,09/08/93 until 05/08/22.I’ve since done a traffic controller course but didn’t complete my 20 hours of work placement,I’ve only completed about 17 hours. With the extremely hot weather here this week I have doubts about if this job is for me as I don’t tolerate heat well and being outside in full PPE gear might not be good for me.I did 4 hours as a part time support worker /domestic help last week, this week I could only manage 1 hour as the heat and humidity made me feel unwell ,I’m still deciding if this job is for me also. I won’t give this up yet ,when I get more used to working as a cleaner and when the days become cooler I might enjoy doing this job more .I’m with Wise Employment now ,they know about my physical and mental health conditions that limit me in the sort of job I can do,they will only refer me to jobs that I’ll be able to do

Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Driver and Assisted Transport Support Officer. In other words, I help transport special needs children to school and back daily.
