Wednesday 8 March 2023

SBS’s new observational series The Swap struggled on debut, coming a distant fifth in the timeslot.

The filler in program, The Best of Russell Gilbert, failed to make an impression for Seven. 237k for a 7.30pm show isn’t good for a Wednesday

Married at First Sight blitz the competition again.

From Nine:

  • The 9Network and Channel 9 No.1 for Total People and all Key Demo’s on Wednesday.
  • Channel Nine takes out the top 5 live streamed programs yesterday against all broadcasters, with Married at First Sight leading the way at #1

Whoever thought compilations of a show that finished ages ago would rate on Seven should be sacked. Just despicable ratings.

If Seven wants to ask why MAFS isn’t losing audience, it’s because they have NOTHING BETTER to put it up against and they’re letting them run free.

Good news! The return of the hit 1997 comedy series Bullpitt! next week, right here on Seven.

It feels like Seven is just giving up and letting Nine win with MAFS. HHIS compilations and WITP do not rate at all compared to MAFS. Time to try to poach MAFS off Nine by signing with Endemol Shine or whoever produces the show to bring it to Seven.

Sometimes a show gets so much momentum that rival networks have to eventually just cut their losses and let the wave run and hope that viewers lose interest. Otherwise they’re just going to keep throwing good money after bad in a futile attempt to dent MAFS. It was a similar predicament with Big Brother in its early days on Ten which was a disruptor to the other networks, who eventually just had to accept it is what it is and just to let the show run its course and hope they can recover at the other end.

There is a difference between running something that seems to be fairly ‘lightweight’ in terms of competition VS being completely irrelevant and just programming rubbish because of no money or whatever, and Seven falls into the latter.

They’re not even trying to engage properly with the audience when they have filler crap like ‘Best of Russell Gilbert’ on Wednesday night against MAFS. Even 10 has The Dog House which is at least a proper show and is moderately competitive.

i didn’t watch the Russel Gilbert thing but thinking of Seven’s usual ‘roast chook’ approach to programming, I can see why they’d think it would have been an alternative to MAFS. It’s safe, largely inoffensive, most likely cheap, and would appeal to a slightly older demographic that remember HHIS and Gilbert fondly and are not so much interested in the faux drama of MAFS.

In hindsight, maybe that wasn’t to be, but TV programmers are not psychic and sometimes have to just work with what they got and balance it with what they’re up against. They can’t just click their fingers and a premium hit show appears to fill a gap. Sometimes there is going to be filler.

I think Seven had not properly planned for Wednesday nights, when Australian Idol was down to two nights a week and when We Interrupt This Broadcast took over the Tuesday 7.30pm timeslot.

What was Seven’s plan for Wednesday nights for Q1 at the beginning of the year. They scheduled Idol for one Wednesday in its first week, given that it started on a Monday. After that it was down to Sun, Mon Tues. They must have had some expectation for that to go up against MAFS. Then when Idol was two nights a week they introduced We Interrupt on Tuesdays. So Sunday to Tuesday seemed to have been planned for. But for Wednesdays we’ve had

CODE 1: MINUTE BY MINUTE for 2 weeks
MRS. BROWN’S BOYS for 2 weeks
THE BEST OF THE RUSSELL GILBERT SHOW for 2 weeks
And in a couple of weeks time it’s Inside Cyprus With Ben Fogle for a few weeks.

Was that the plan? Did they commission nothing? Or is this a result of MAFS dominance?

Maybe the balloon show was scheduled?

No word that Blow Up has started recordings - but The 1% Club has.

Failure for either show would be tempting fodder for headline writers.

Those Hot Seat numbers are destroying Nine’s lead in for news
