ABC was the standout performer last night with its best Wednesday result of the year – up 1 from last week’s high. Nine still claimed a win while dropping 2 points with the other networks up slightly week-on-week.

It was the season 2 premiere if Fisk that helped give ABC a boost. With 543,000 metro viewers it was an easy win for the 9pm timeslot. The result was up 20k on the first ever episode last year. The show is liable to post significant increases in catch up viewing after being the second-most timeshifted show of last year.

Also on ABC, Hard Quiz was down slightly while Question Everything got a boost to a season high with an extra 80,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, The Block season continued to roll on with another easy victory, up 35k week-on-week. Nine’s premiere movie that followed just made the top 20 while giving some improved late night viewing numbers.

For Seven, Kitchen Nightmares Australia was up slightly and ranked third at 7.30. Earlier Seven News posted another +100k win at 6pm. Nine News wasn’t helped by Brisbane posting it lowest Wednesday number of the year with a rating usually only seen on a Friday night.

For 10, The Project 7pm was the top show with just 272,000. Dog House Australia was just outside the top 20. It and Real Love Boat Australia that followed were even with last week’s results.

The season final of Gogglebox did well to topped Foxtel viewing.

Impressive figures for the season two premiere of Fisk.

Can’t believe that 32,000 viewers stuck around for the World Cup match (Afghanistan v NZ) even though no play was possible due to rain, and it was eventually called off at 9.20pm AEDT.

The first netball test between Australia and England did well on pay TV, given the events of past week (specifically Gina Rinehart’s withdrawal of her company’s $15 million sponsorship of Netball Australia) leading up to the match.

Nine News in Sydney did alright last night, beating Sydney by 20k. However unfortunately for Nine, they did terrible for news in other markets especially Melbourne and Perth. The former was 66k behind 7 at 6:30pm and 50k behind at 6, equalling an average of 57k behind 7 for both hours. In Perth Nine got smashed as normal but did decent in Brisbane and Adelaide with an average of 20k behind for the former and 11k for the latter.

I feel like there needs to be big changes at GTV. It went from Nine News’s best rating market to the point where Sydney, Brisbane and even Adelaide sometimes have better results for Nine than Melbourne. Like I have said before, I think the afternoon news needs to be moved to 5 as a trial over summer. If successful, keep it there but if not move it back to 4.

From Nine:

  • The Block dominates timeslot across the 5 City and in all metro capitals with People 25-54, GS + Child and Total People
  • Nine takes out the top 4 programs live streamed yesterday against all broadcasters, with The Block leading the way at #1
  • The Block recorded a Live BVOD Audience of 67,000, an increase of +18% YoY.
  • The Block recorded a Live + VOD BVOD Audience of 118,000 an increase of +18% YoY.
  • 9News wins the timeslot with Total People in Sydney
  • ACA wins 7pm timeslot across 5 City and East Coast and in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide with Total People
  • Today wins breakfast slot across the East Coast and in Brisbane with Total People
  • 9 Network and Channel 9 win Wednesday with all key demos and Total People

I wouldn’t call Nine’s Brisbane result decent.

It was a very poor result. It was the lowest Wednesday result of the year and the 5th lowest-rated bulletin.

Nine’s 4PM news is apparently a ratings winner so it would be a stupid move to abandon that timeslot. Especially with the lead-in of Tipping Point.

Interesting that Tipping Point at 4 outrated Seven’s Afternoon News.

The afternoon news ratings usually rely on the lead in. Tipping Point is clearly winning the 3pm time slot against The Chase UK.

Also interesting that it ourated Nine’s Afternoon News that followed - which is the reverse of what should be happening leading up to 6pm.

Some of us have been saying all year that 7 need to work out a strategy to counteract Topping Point. It has flipped the afternoon ratings from 7 to 9.

They could extend the Afternoon News from 3.00-5.00pm. Wouldn’t be too costly for Seven. Just an idea.

Yes, but the above post was for Perth, who I am sure that every MediaSpy member knows that Perth loves 7 and hates 9.

I’ve been saying for months, Hot Seat has been destroying Nine’s lead in. Imagine if Tipping Point was moved to 5pm and made a local version, we could see a huge turn around in news numbers for 6pm.

The problem is… Hot Seat seems to work in Brisbane and Sydney, but struggled in Melbourne. Adelaide and Perth have completely dropped it.

Hot Seats future relies on the future of Sydney audience.

No they haven’t. They were moved to 4pm and 3pm respectively.
