The end of the current season of Married At First Sight can’t come soon enough for the rival networks with the final dinner party averaging 1.763 million last night, up 50k week-on-week.

That helped Nine to an easy +7-point win on Wednesday. Nine was slightly higher than last week with Seven and 10 both losing share while ABC improved by one and SBS got a 0.5 boost as Alone Australia premiered.

For Seven, The 1% Club UK offered the best competition to Nine’s juggernaut, steady on 830k to stay ahead of ABC’s 7.30.

There was another low Wednesday result for 10 with The Dog House Australia the best in prime time though this week up 35k to a season high 350k.

Meanwhile the debut of the third season of Alone Australia on SBS had 214k across a double episode to just make the top 30. That was down on last season’s premiere that had 262k and the lowest launch episode so far, though previous seasons have seen 70% increases with consolidated viewing.

Over on ABC, Hard Quiz improved to 570k with The Weekly with Charlie Pickering averaging 518k, a 40k improvement while the premiere two-hour Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala was just under 300k.

Scrublands concluded on Nine with 460k, down 50k while The Front Bar slipped 30k to 527k this week. Unfiltered later was down 50k to 218k. For 10, season one final of Elsbeth was slightly lower with 232k with NCIS Hawaii on 169k.

News numbers were generally higher. Seven stayed 70k ahead at 6pm after Tipping Point won by 100k at 5pm. A Current Affair was on a three-week high at 7pm where Home and Away had almost 900k to beat ABC news.

I reckon SBS chose the wrong night to launch the new season of Alone Australia. Still, the audience should increase through timeshifting and catch up via SBS on Demand.

  • 9News was the No.1 news service with Total People across the 5 City Metro and in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. It achieved a National Total TV Reach of 2.028 million and a Total TV National Audience of 1.260 million - up 17.8% on the same night last year. On 9Now, its BVOD audience of 114,000 was up 50.0% year-on-year.

  • A Current Affair dominated the 7.00pm timeslot with Total People across Australia and in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. It secured a National Total TV Reach of 1.799 million and a Total TV National Audience of 1.146 million - up 23.1% year-on-year. On 9Now, it recorded a BVOD Audience of 121,000 - up 86.2 % on the same night last year.

  • Tipping Point Australia was the No. 1 afternoon game show with Total People across Australia and in all five metro capitals. It recorded a National Total TV Reach of 1.337 million, a Total TV National Audience of 716,000 (up 13.8% year-on-year) and a BVOD audience of 63,000 - 65.8% year-on-year.

  • Scrublands dominated its timeslot in Sydney and Brisbane with Total People. It secured a National Total TV Reach of 1.653 million and a Total TV National Audience of 460,000. On 9Now, it recorded a BVOD Audience of 73,000.

  • Today was the breakfast program of choice with Total People in Melbourne and Brisbane. It recorded a Total TV National Audience of 311,000 and a BVOD audience of 42,000 - up 20.0% on the same morning last year.

  • The 9Network was the No. 1 network on Wednesday across the 5 City Metro with Total People and all key demos.

  • 9Now was the No. 1 CFTA BVOD platform on Wednesday across Australia with Total People and all key demos.

Nine news Perth has really grown. Looking back at 2 years ago it had 47/53k (it was split coding still). I remember quite a few times even 10 news was ahead of Nine news (and Perth would even be 10s highest bulletin)

It has benefitted from the new afternoon line-up; Hot Seat used to be at 3pm, then Tipping Point UK then 9News WA First.

Terrible results outside of Melbourne, expensive new AFL broadcast deal aside, perhaps Seven should be re-thinking its current programming saturation strategy, certainly nationally/ Sydney and Brisbane?

Question is does the extra exposure and promotion translate into higher viewership (be it reach and/or average) for the weekend’s games, especially Swans, Giants, Lions and Suns?
