Every network worth their salt should be doing a full review of all of their ‘second/third tier’ sports contracts to make sure that the rights they have can’t be sold twice (unless it’s either a contractually allowed sublicence or approved on-sell) in the way World Athletics have done for this year’s World Championship.

If I was SBS, I would be absolutely livid at what has transpired in relation to an event they’ve broadcast for a long time. Of course, there’s a proviso if they’ve been negligent around the terms in the rights agreement.

I reckon SBS will think twice about bidding for the rights for future World Athletics Championships, unless World Athletics can guarantee the rights are exclusive to one broadcaster.

The next championships will be in Beijing in September 2027, which again is in a favourable time zone for Australian telecast.

Quite amazing results for the World Athletics Championships. SBS and Nine would be ecstatic! Feel a bit sorry for the former, that they couldn’t get exclusivity.

A lot of these deals, the broadcasters know it’s not exclusive as the exclusive rights are usually a higher sum but usually the fact they’ve signed it first is enough to signal to the market not to bother as someone already has it and the ability to drive profit would be lessened.

The issue is because of what Nine has done with the World Athletics Championship (and I’m not saying this as a criticism of them but an observation), they’ve opened up a potentially significant Pandora’s Box whereby if there’s a league/competition a network wants which another network has, that network would now be negligent not to ask the question about whether they can also show it.
