Last night’s World Cup semi-final broke all ratings records for the OzTAM post 2001 era with the highest overnight share ever recorded and the highest audience for a program on one network.

The 4.5 million preliminary number is likely to be close to the final result as Seven ran very close to the advertised and EPG times last night. The result smashed the previous highest metro audience that was 4.04 million for the Hewitt v Safrin Australian Open final in 2005 while the previous highest audience share was for Nine’s AO Women’s final of 2022 with 68.1%. Seven’s main channel share is also a record.

Sydney delivered the biggest audience with 1.42 million just pipping Melbourne’s 1.38m. Almost 1.8 million stayed around for the post match segment of the coverage. BVOD viewing will add significantly to the total.

While 10 ran dead and Nine only showed The Block in two markets, ABC put up mostly new programs that saw Gruen at the top prime time entertainment offering of the night on just 215,000.

Meanwhile the new season of Gogglebox was hammered on Foxtel.

Hard to know if we will ever see numbers like this again especially mid week.

We can now only speculate about what the audience might have been for the Sunday final had the Matildas won last night.

Wow

Now that’s defied all expectations.

Poor Seven would’ve hoped for a Matildas win last night so it could’ve gone higher on Sunday.

Not all bad news for Nine though as it looks like Today had a small win.

That’s nice

Of all the days, I’m surprised Nine News Melbourne won.

Wow those figures are unbelievable. The single cities of Melbourne and Sydney rated higher than a national show rates on a good day :exploding_head:

Wow!

Channel Nine exexutives will be breathing a sigh of relief at the result

Boy oh boy wowee. The FIFA Women’s World Cup smashed records on Channel 7. :hushed:
I noticed that Sydney and Melbourne markets have smashed over 1 million records. How could this happen?

And this is probably just household ratings, the audience at pubs, clubs and public venues would be much higher.

Phenomenal audience figures and shares for the Women’s World Cup semi final.

1 million isn’t unprecedented for Melbourne (1.63m for 2021 AFL) but could be a record for Sydney.

The Total TV figure with regional and BVOD is likely to take that closer to 7(+?) million - and that is just what can be counted and reported on! let alone Optus, viewing parties, pubs, live sites, etc… the mind boggles. It’s been an incredible few week and such a great vibe around the country. Just what we needed, and the viewers responded in droves!

More than one million viewers of the game in each of those cities.

I would like to see the figures for the Block in Sydney and Brisbane

Interesting how the highest ever rating sport matches like the 2005 AO Final and 2003 Rugby World Cup Final and now the 2023 FWWC Semi Final all have Australia losing with Cathy Freeman being the exception although that was a more shorter event. One day Australia is going to win one of these big rating finals and you won’t see such a massive drop off to the post game/presentations ratings.

As an aside, I know it’s a home World Cup but Soccer can claim to be the national game with these ratings. Although I think the lack of ads compared to other sports massively helps the game attract a casual audience and gets people invested.

Terrible results for Seven!

Just kidding.

Very trully amazing numbers 4.5m? Wow.

Less than 200k, but we can’t post the figure here. You can see the exact figure on TVtonight.

68,000 is the smallest ever pay TV audience in the show’s history. Two episodes in April this year both rated 88,000.

Great, thanks!
