Married At First Sight continued its dominance on Wednesday, last night outrating the combined audience of its reality competition on Seven and 10 with Idol And Survivor both under 400k for the first time.

On the comparable night last year MAFS had 807,000, Survivor 486,000 and Voice Generations (final ep) 505,000.

Nine News was less competitive last night but ACA was again over 600k and a timeslot winner by 30k. Later another broadcast of Rocketman made the top 20 for some late night shares.

At 6pm Seven News was back to winning all markets again after The Chase was more dominant over Hot Seat than Tuesday. Home and Away was up week-on-week and continues to do well in catch up viewing. After Idol, it was a tough job for The Front Bar’s new All Sports season premiere that managed 315,000 with more than half the audience in Melbourne. At breakfast Sunrise had its biggest (weekday) audience of the year. Idol was 8th in 25-54

Only two top 20 entries for 10 with Survivor and The Project 7pm with Survivor still managing top 5 entries in the key demos.

ABC News again did well while 7.30 and Hard Quiz (repeat) were nominally second in their timeslot while a Spicks and Specks repeat also made the top 20.

Over of Foxtel, Sky News’s evening line up continues to be near the top of the STV rankings but with less than 40,000 viewers nationally they are struggling. On this night last year Paul Murray had 58k and Credlin 47k.

That is questionable as The Front Bar had more viewers than the movie when they went head to head.

Nine again won the three east coast markets with Seven ahead in Adelaide and Perth by 1 point.

In Melbourne The Front Bar ranked 10th.

The ranking of the three commercial bulletins morning/midday included. Seven News is about 20k ahead of Nine while the ranking of Midday is very low, it is rating at about half of Nine’s bulletin. It has remained fairly constant - the two reality encores that are now in the schedule at noon haven’t impacted the numbers.

Sunrise had its biggest audience of the year and was 55k ahead of an inconsistent Today that was 25k ahead of News Breakfast.

Some trends noted in Perth this year - Today is consistently beating News Breakfast.

The trend of Today winning in Melbourne was shattered yesterday with a massive audience for Sunrise - the biggest for any show in any market this year.

Not really as Rocket Man’s timeslot also included going up against Kitchen Nightmares that had one third of The Front Bar’s audience.

Certainly concerning territory for Idol.

Build it and they will comes to mind, I think a few on here have said that, but it’s not going to double its audience as it goes on? That’s the territory that they would have wanted.

It’s in flop territory now. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yep - The Front Bar (as much as it’s a great and well-honed program) shouldn’t be in striking distance of Idol. Additionally, it doesn’t have the saving grace Australian Survivor has of at least doing okay-ish in the demos.

Fair to say Idol’s ratings are a… touch down.

I’ll get my coat

Idol isn’t doing well with Survivor also popular on 10. 7 should’ve postponed it until after MAFS

If people wanted to watch it they would be. Dead concept.

That’s a shame… (written with sarcasm font)

And what did they have in the basket to show instead? Re-runs of Hey Hey?

Remember on this forum during the cricket rights, “people don’t watch ten” well the people that are watching ten are the money makers. Who is watching Seven? The 55+ who most likely watched the news, HAA, and then fell asleep on the sofa with the box on to only wake up halfway through the Frontbar, and then head off to bed!

Right now, I would rather be ten over seven, and nine over all of them.

Ten still have HYBPA to come, which will also boost the 25-45 yrs bracket, what’s seven got?

Well if Idol doesn’t work and SAS didn’t work what else can Seven try (serious question)? The Voice? MKR again? The testcard?

You can’t really blame Seven for trying different things when nothing’s landed against MAFS and Survivor. Yes most of their shows are awful (although Idol is probably the best out of the lot they’ve tried) but then again so is MAFS and look at it.

Trouble is there is no other watercooler format around the world at the moment that can do the same. Either that or they poach another show from another network and give that a go.

Seven could’ve tried giving Idol auditions a go during Summer and move BBL to 7Mate (they did return Home and Away early so anything is possible). It would’ve at least been competitive with the tennis and The Bachelors and then get into the live shows just as MAFS starts for full momentum. Alas they’re not brave enough to even think about that.

Holey Moley was tried two years ago and failed in the 7:30pm timeslot L. Axed after one season

Footy.

Something other than reality competition would be a good start for Seven. Maybe a different show each night? Why do we need all three commercials doing so called tent pole 7.30pm programming 3-4 nights a week all the time?

I think the answer is obvious: It reliably rates 90% of the time.

10 have tried this approach before and failed miserably, for better or for worse.

Perhaps if they are going to relaunch Australian Idol, stay true to the title of the show and don’t have half the judging panel not recognise iconic Australian songs when used in auditions or not know who Shannon Noll is.

The reason Australian Idol is a flop is because we all know how the show is going to play out and then the final winner will go on to do absolutley nothing.

In contrast, the audience doesn’t quite know where MAFS will go this year although I do wonder if reports in the Daily Mail about couples already breaking up (eg. the guy with the indian lady) will cause people to lose interest.

Either way, its a cracking start to the year for Nine again.
