Watermarks

They are ALL massive…

The only watermark that I find acceptable on TV these days is the 7TWO one on Prime7 (which is different to the one that Seven uses). It’s small and faint.

NBN’s isn’t too bad since its small, but it’s not a very faint one.

The watermarks in south east Asia are cringe worthy.

That doesn’t excuse how intrusive Australian watermarks are.

I was reading the British TV forums, and there were tons of complaints about how the new Channel 5 watermark was too bright, too large and too distracting. I had a look at a screenshot of the aforementioned watermark, and it was tiny! Like, half the size of the current Seven watermark and a similar brightness. And this was considered too bright!

I can’t help but wonder what a Pom would think, shoud they see what Seven, Nine and Ten get away with on a consistent basis with those awful promotional watermarks.

Some of the watermarks I saw in England were not subtle, and that was only back in November.

Absolutely…ours are nothing on some of the ones in Indonesia for example.

The watermarking efforts of Seven, Nine and Ten look world class compared to those “something for every corner of the screen” examples there!

Although sadly, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if some marketing guru at one of our networks eventually gets a few ideas from those! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I wonder how long Southern Cross Television will hold out? Got to be the last FTA channel without a watermark in the world :grinning:

The ones posted above better be deleted quickly, otherwise a marketing guru might come across them! :stuck_out_tongue:

At the very least, I wonder how long it will be until Prime7 News adopts a watermark? Along with Southern Cross’ full bulletins, they would have to be the last major regional news service not to use one now that NBN News is watermarking!

watermarks was good for when Aggregation started we dont need them now if we dont know what channel were watching somethings wrong

I rang WIN and Prime along time ago to ask why the watermarks, There response was along the lines of we have too do it now for copyright reasons. When Prime started there first watermark they did it because apparently people would ring up and say they didn’t know what channel they were watching. Must of been viewers that could get both Prime and 7 I assume.

When Prime first we started watermarking here in Newcastle in early 1992, which was within about a week of first going to air, they said it was to assist viewers with tuning in the new stations (along with NRTV).

Three months later, they changed their tune, stating that it was then being used to help viewers to differentiate from fortuitous Channel 7 Sydney reception, which was a fair bit snowy for many locals.

The Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra and Orange Prime watermarks that I saw from 1992-1994 were all different. Wollongong’s was the faintest.

Tamworth/Taree didn’t get a watermark until mid 1995. By then the watermark became the same one across all markets.

I hesitate to call these watermarks - shown for extended periods during programs

If they’re going to do something like that, then why not have them all the way to the right so they’re not so intrusive?

They’re as far to the right as possible without being cropped on a standard TV. Remember TV capture cards and other computer TV receivers don’t crop any portion of the image.

I don’t think that’s the case. The HD of the watermark is nowhere near the edge of a standard TV screen even with overcan turned on.

All depends on the TV. I just bought a Dick Smith 31.5" a few months ago. The Ten watermark touches the edge of the screen. The 9HD one is pretty safe, though.

I haven’t got any equipment with me to cap at the moment.

But I notice that WIN tonight have a light blue coloured tinge through their watermark.

It looks quite nice in my opinion
