US Television

The article says Nickelodeon’s Super Bowl telecast will be shown in Australia on a delayed basis (ESPN and Seven have the live broadcast rights here). How much delay are we talking about?

It’s a fair question, but makes sense. There’d be no point in showing a kids-focused live in Australia when it’s 10.30am on a school day, or in the UK where it’s overnight… just whether they do it on Monday night or save it to a weekend or something.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if the “Nick is now on 10” thing means it gets pushed out to Paramount+ rather than anything 10-based.

It can’t be shown live anyway as 10 don’t have the rights to NFL. I’d say it will get a weekend afternoon run on 13 and be on P+ 48 hours after the US broadcast.

I just wondered whether Seven (and ESPN to some extent) would baulk on it being on TV even in the future. On the other hand, usually broadcasters for NFL games only get 72 hours until it officially goes back into the “archives” (judging how long you get replays on Kayo et al) and then the NFL can probably do whatever they want with it, including sub-letting the Nick broadcast.

The same issues would apply in the UK of course, where ITV own the live rights to the game and Paramount own Channel 5 and its offshoots.

An update to the situation:
The CW affiliations in Philly, Tampa Bay and San Francisco will be switched to WPHL 17, WTTA 38 and KRON 4 respectively, all of which currently carry MyTV and owned by Nexstar:

In Detroit, Mission Broadcasting has bought WADL 38.

It’s signed under an SSA (shared service agreement) with Nexstar, which means:

  • Nexstar will be responsible for advertising on WADL, but Mission still has control on their programming, editorial and the Mission-controlled facilities;
  • Nexstar will provide services to WADL in graphic design, production, continuity, master control, transmission facilities, assistance in buying programmes upon request and negotiating retransmission consent;
  • Nexstar is also able to acquire the station license and other properties.

Despite DirecTV crying foul, it’s expected the affiliation will move there.

Nexstar also striked a deal with Hearst Television, extending their current affiliates’ contracts and also switching KQCA Sacramento from MyTV to the network:

Parallel to all that, they also bought KUSI 51 in San Diego, making it a sister station to Fox affiliate KSWB. Given the CW affiliation is currently running secondarily on Tegna’s KFMB, a move is speculated. For now, it’s promised the two newsrooms will be indepedent of each other:

Over on CBS, the outgoing stations has been adopting new brands.

KMAX in Sacramento acts more as a sister station to WCCO, including an adaptation to the new boxed style seen in CBS O&Os:

Meanwhile, WUPA in Atlanta is advertised as Atlanta69 in recent promos. This is a market where CBS currently owns a CW station, but not a CBS station (that goes to WANF, owned by Gray).

TVNewsTalk users also spotted some domains in similar patterns are registered by CBS.

And bigger changes are coming in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, as CBS has filed a callsign change to the FCC. WPCW Pittsburgh will be renamed WPKD, while KBCW is to be called KPYX. It’s also speculated that CBS is dropping the News Now block. NewscastStudio has the scoop.

KBCW/KPYX is now advertised on screen as the inventively named KPIX+ (the K is silent), with new newscasts coming on 8 and 9 pm (the same timeslot as KRON’s now):

Until the FCC decide to change their mind on this, the Nexstar/Mission setup is practically the same as the Sinclair/Cunningham setup that’s been permitted for two decades and counting.

It’ll get through eventually, and I suspect eventually the 39% (after UHF discount) reach rule will go before any of these semi-shells fall foul of anything much.

Why does it say day 16 twice?

Just a technicality. Sol 16 is in Martian days and Sixteenth day is in Earth days. Martian sols are about 35 minutes longer than Earth days

Assumed that they weren’t measuring in Martian days :joy:

It’s all very tongue in cheek of course.

Funny that the astronaut is reading a South Australian newspaper.

BTW, the front page of Adelaide Advertiser was dated May 4 this year, and is about the stabbing of two policemen by Sean Ferris in Crystal Brook. The attacker was then shot by one of the injured policemen and died.

And their website frontpage now runs a video promoting the switch in September. The same promo also runs across other Nexstar O&Os, as for example:

On the Nexstar side of things, they’re reportedly reaching a deal with Tegna, to switch KONG Seattle and WATL Atlanta from indepdendent and MyTV respectively to CW. Both station currently have a sister station in news output - KING and WXIA. WPCH is also under consideration, but its Canadian reception might be a problem:

And they’ve also reportedly reached a deal with Sinclair to switch WPNT in Pittsburgh, currently running MyTV, to CW as well. Worth noting the station had previously broadcast LIV Golf, one of Nexstar’s big investments after getting the network:

The WPKD callsign change was approved - they’re KDKA+ from September 1 onwards:

There’re also more stations going with the Atlanta69 brand - WKBD will be Detroit50, despite the existence of WWJ/CBS Detroit. According to TVPassport, they’re porting over the 7am breakfast newscast from streaming.

Meanwhile, WPSG will be Philly57, their long-standing nickname, in bright green like their sister KYW:

And with the promo of Primetime Sacramento, KMAX’s new 8pm news, looks like they’re going down the route as KMAX31, rather than the current boxed look:

Entering the 2000th post in a sour note: vale to Bob Barker, a fixture of daytime TV thanks to his 35-year long career as host of the popular CBS game show The Price is Right, plus an 18-year tenure as host of the NBC game show “Truth or Consequences”. He was 99.

He was a popular, but equally divisive personality: over 52 years as game show host and daytime TV figure, and an ardent defendant of animal rights and protection (which led to his resignation as Miss Universe emcee in 1988), but often criticized nowadays for her relationship with TPIR models (or “Beauties”) in inappropriate ways which today could led to considerable debate, and leading to a sexual harassment suit in 1994.

After retiring from the game show, he remained active in his animal rights campaigning and lived peacefully and in good health in his Hollywood Hills estate.
