The Late Show with Stephen Colbert axed as of May and the Late Show brand being retired.
I find it incredibly hard to take seriously their reasoning based on everything happening and the fact that if they wanted to save money there is a lot of fat they could have cut from it first.
I kind of agree - although that staff and show canât be cheap necessarily? Versus whatever they are going to put in. Itâs sad
Does this mean 10âs late night schedule will have something else post-midnight now
No, agreed, it isnât cheap. Itâs bloated as is, they donât need a band, they donât need a theatre (although I think CBS owns it anyway), they could downsize the staff. It could be much leaner, but a week after publicly calling the networkâs payout to Trump a âBig fat bribeâ, and the sale STILL not being signed off on, do we really not think cancelling Colbert wasnât part of the quid pro quo of getting a sale over the line?
Seriously?
Could The Daily Show be next on the firing line?
Well they canât show a show thatâs not being made anymore
That has to go too, unless Trumpâs obsession was just with Colbert/Jimmy/Seth. Itâs clear that Paramount has no intention of protecting its brand from news to entertainment, all to get this sale over the line, and paying off a corrupt government to do it.
Without trying to open a can of worms and acknowledging Australia is very small fry, I wonder if any of this also played into decisions around the projectâs axing.
They wonât have to, Home Shopping can cover from midnight. Theyâve already given up from 11pm with the 6pm program repeat.
Current state of Network TV Late Night as of today (18/7/25)
Colbert - Confirmed to end next May, Late Show brand retired
Kimmel - Contract up for renewal in 2026, has stated before he may not renew (LA Times article linked below)
Fallon - Contract extended last year, will remain host of Tonight Show up to 2028
Meyers - Contract also extended until 2028, although with cuts to the showâs budget resulting in it losing its house band
And on the cable side of things:
Oliver - Contract extended in Dec 2023 through 2026
Maher - Contract extended in Mar 2024 through 2026, though he had expressed his wishes to hang up his coat back in December last year
Stewart - Contract extended in Oct 2024 to the end of 2025
Such a shame that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is finishing up in May 2026. I donât mind his show and the guests he has. Although he has relied a tad too much in recent times on Trump - with daily monologues about him and not much on other daily topical events.
Late show peaks were the âLetterman vs Leno eraâ.
This smells of Paramount sucking up to the Mutant Orange to get the Skydance merger through, although Iâd buy the cost cutting excuse, given how South Park is being delayed too.
I wonder if they continue programming late nights or give it back to affiliates.
Nothing, just straight to Home Shopping infomercials.
Colbert not being replaced I remember it debuting in 1993 with Letterman
And how Paramount pulled all 26 seasons of the show off Paramount+ worldwide (excluding the United States).
Isnât it coming to 10 fast-tracked later this year
