UNDER INVESTIGATION SPECIAL: UNRAVELLING THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF EDEN WESTBROOK

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, AT 8.30PM ON CHANNEL 9 & 9NOW

In the blissful coastal town of St Helens in Tasmania, the shocking discovery of 15-year-old Eden Westbrook’s lifeless body, visible to all from the main street, was a traumatic scene.

Her death was quickly assessed by police as suicide and a three-page report by a coroner agreed.

Her grieving parents, haunted by the stark disparity between that verdict and their daughter’s vibrant essence, would ignite their relentless quest for the truth of what happened on the night Eden died.

And it is the focus of Under Investigation with Liz Hayes next Tuesday, June 18, at 8.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

In this special episode, esteemed journalist Liz Hayes embarks on a mission to unravel the mystery surrounding Eden Westbrook’s tragic end, aided by a panel of experts at the program’s renowned War Table. Among them, Hobart crime reporter Amber Wilson, seasoned podcaster Jay Walkerden, former detective Damian Marrett, and Eden’s father, Jason Westbrook.

UI will hear allegations of crucial missing CCTV footage, questions as to why key witnesses are still to be interviewed by police, and disturbing revelations about an investigator’s dark past as a paedophile.

As part of her investigation, Liz Hayes travels to St Helens, to the scene where Eden died, to speak with witnesses and to meet with Eden’s mother, Amanda Westbrook.

Liz Hayes said: “After visiting the town of St Helens, tracing Eden’s last steps, as well as speaking to witnesses and Eden’s family, the gravity of this tragedy was abundantly obvious. And while our focus is always to bring much needed light to unsolved criminal cases, our commitment also lies in championing justice and providing answers for loved ones like Jason and Amanda.

“It’s a delicate balance between amplifying their voices while offering solace and hope. With an outstanding panel of experts by my side, it’s the hope of Under Investigation that the family’s years of not knowing what happened the night Eden died will come to an end.”

Channel 9’s acclaimed investigative journalism program, Under Investigation with Liz Hayes, was honoured with the prestigious Media Diversity Australia Award for its groundbreaking episode, Shots Fired, at last night’s 2024 Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism, hosted by the Walkley Foundation.

The award celebrates journalists who are making an outstanding contribution through their reporting on diverse people or issues in Australia, and this is the first time any commercial television network has been recognised in this category.

Shots Fired investigated one of Australia’s most contentious criminal cases, involving the shooting of Kumanjayi Walker by former Northern Territory police officer Zachary Rolfe. This tragic incident sparked national debate and scrutiny. Under Investigation revisited the events of that fateful night, providing viewers with unprecedented access to police bodycam footage, exclusive interviews with key figures, including the Crown Prosecutor, community elders, and eyewitnesses.

The episode posed critical questions about the preventability of Walker’s death and explored complex issues of justice, race and policing in First Nations communities.

Recognised by the Walkley Foundation, the judges celebrated the episode for telling a “complex story in a clear, honest and nuanced way for a broad audience. The journalism is relational, involving respected community voices and key players, using a structure that centres on listening and talking to achieve greater understanding. At a time when audiences are avoiding traditional-style adversarial news, Shots Fired stands out.”

Liz Hayes said: “It’s incredibly rewarding to be acknowledged, especially given our small yet mighty team at Under Investigation. Our mission is unwavering: to uncover the truth behind challenging and significant cases.

Shots Fired was a particularly challenging and sensitive episode for us, so receiving this award is a profound honour that truly celebrates the relentless effort and dedication of our entire team. At UI, we’re committed to leaving no stone unturned, and we’re eager to continue this important work.”

Executive Producer of UI, Gareth Harvey, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our program and our talented team. It’s an immense privilege for Under Investigation, a leader in investigative journalism programming, to be awarded with the Media Diversity Australia Award - the first time for any commercial television network.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved. Producing this program is incredibly rewarding and has a ripple effect beyond each episode, marking an even greater achievement.”

Close to the axe:

If DailyMail has any merrit, the article says she will report for Nine News.

She’s far too good to be a reporter for the nightly news.

Why can’t she return to 60 Minutes?

I felt the show drifted away from its original theme of investigating historical and cold cases.

Didn’t seem right they they got involved in current cases, perhaps looking for a quick ratings hit from a current unsolved crime. And then their investigations didn’t turn up any new evidence.

Some stories weren’t even about crimes (Spy Nation).

Liz? Why wouldn’t she go back to 60 Minutes? Isn’t she still on it anyway?

Yeah! It says she’s going to 9News Sydney as a reporter.

Why not back to 60 full time?

Probably cheaper to just have her at Nine news Sydney?

No I think you’re reading it wrong…

“While Hayes’ show might be gone, the star journalist will stay on at the network (which) she first joined four decades again as a news reporter in Nine’s Sydney”

It’s saying she won’t leave 9… and that she first joined 9 forty years ago when where she started as a news reporter.

Ohhhh thanks for clearing up. Should have said IN WHICH she joined…

Terribly worded sentence.

The most intriguing thing about this is the fact the Daily Mail article was apparently written by former Spotlght producer Steve Jackson…
