Liz Hayes returns for a new season of Under Investigation

Under Investigation with Liz Hayes, the gripping series that puts a spotlight on unsolved crimes and mysteries from Australia and around the world, returns on Monday, August 23, at 8.40pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

Viewers will take a seat at the table with Hayes’ team of leading investigators and forensic experts as their methodical analysis unearths startling new clues, lines of inquiry, and provides gripping insights into unfolding cases under investigation.

In the new series, Under Investigation exposes how Sallie-Anne Huckstepp, a single mother and heroin-addicted prostitute from Kings Cross, changed the course of Australian police history in 1981 after her decision to blow the whistle on corruption in a bombshell 60 Minutes interview with Ray Martin.

Murdered for her disclosures, now 40 years later the avenging voice of Sallie-Anne returns from the grave – with never-before-seen footage from the interview that helps identify her probable killer.

Other crimes and mysteries examined include Byron Bay’s missing Belgian backpacker, Theo Hayez, who vanished into thin air in 2019; the death of “The Girl in the Chute”, Melbourne woman Phoebe Handsjuk; and Beth Bernard’s horrific murder on Victoria’s Phillip Island, a 35-year-old cold case featuring former top Homicide Detective Gary Jubelin.

Internationally, we investigate the 20-year legacy of 9/11 – and the subsequent War on Terror. Hear from James Dorney, a young Australian who was working on the 92nd floor of the World Trade Centre when it was hit, and former Prime Minister John Howard, who was in Washington, D.C. when the attacks occurred on September 11, 2001. And with a crack team of military experts and strategists, we probe the likelihood of a War with China.

9/11 – YEAR 20

Monday 30 August

Twenty years ago this September, nineteen young men brought the most heavily armed nation on Earth to its knees.

The men, carrying only pocket-knives, hijacked four passenger jets and on live television, flew them into the twin towers of the 110-story World Trade Center in Manhattan, and the Pentagon in Washington – the home of the US military.

On that terrible morning nearly 3000 people died, more than the Pearl Harbour attack in World War 2, including hundreds of first responders who entered the skyscrapers attempting to save lives. On September 11 the world learned the awful power of a new form of warfare: terror. Twenty years later we investigate the legacy of 9/11 –
and the subsequent War on Terror, including the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan that cost thousands of lives and became the longest ever engagement for Australian forces.

Under Investigation brings together the Sydney man who survived the falling towers, the Australian Prime Minister who was in Washington at the time of the attacks, as well as experts on politics, counterterrorism, and conspiracies.

We also speak with those who refuse to believe official reports on the attacks, those who sifted through rubble to explain the collapse of the World Trade Center, and the man charged with heading the Australian security response.

AT THE WAR TABLE:

  • James Dorney, then a 25-year old working on the 92ⁿᵈ floor of the towers. James had just arrived at work and finished his first call of the day when he saw the world explode outside his window.

  • The Honourable John Howard, was in Washington to celebrate the 50ᵗʰ Anniversary of the signing of the Anzus Treaty when the attacks occurred.

  • Professor Simon Jackman, CEO of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. An expert in US Politics, Simon speaks to the political effect of the 9/11 attacks and the War on Terror.

  • Dr. Anne Aly, counterterrorism expert and Australia’s first female Muslim Member of Federal Parliament. Dr. Aly entered politics to bring a diverse voice to crucial discussions about Muslim extremism.

  • Professor Jolanda Jetten, is one of Australia’s leading researchers in the field of social psychology. She is an expert on the way traumatic events affect cities like New York and how conspiracy theories arise after extreme events.

ALSO INTERVIEWED:

  • Dennis Richardson – as head of ASIO when the planes hit the WTC, he helped steer the Australian government’s response to the attacks.

  • Richard Gage – founder of Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth and a leading proponent of the conspiracy theory that the WTC was destroyed by a controlled demolition.

  • Dr. Jonathan Barnett – an expert in fire safety engineering, he testified to Congress on the events that led to the collapse of the WTC.

SEARCHING FOR THEO

Monday 6 September at 8:40 pm

It’s one of the most baffling missing persons cases in recent memory. A young Belgian backpacker, kicked out of a bar in the celebrity tourist town of Byron Bay, wanders off into the night and vanishes without trace. The disappearance of THEO HAYEZ galvanised a town into action but raised shocking concerns about a seedy underbelly of drugs, alcohol, mental illness, and homelessness which could have contributed to a backpacker’s untimely demise.

18-year-old Theo Hayez was finishing a 6-month backpacking holiday across Australia. He’d spent time staying with his uncle and family in Victoria and his beloved cousins in south-east Queensland before stopping off for several days in Byron Bay. On the night of May 31ˢᵗ, 2019, he accompanied some fellow backpackers to a drinking hotspot called Cheeky Monkey but was asked to leave for appearing intoxicated. He wandered into the night, alone, never to be seen again.

Massive searches for Theo discovered just his beloved abandoned baseball cap lying near a track leading to Byron’s famous Tallow Beach.

Police believed he’d attempted to scale steep cliffs and fallen to his death in raging surf. BUT startling new digital evidence obtained from his mobile phone records tell a different story and shed incredible new light on the missing backpacker’s final moments. Under Investigation has put together a stunning jigsaw of Theo’s last night using a “ghost” trail of digital information. It shows every step he took until he stops using his phone. Geo-spatial positioning can now pinpoint his last known locations.

And stunningly 13 hours after he last uses his phone Under Investigation can show his mobile phone moves!

SEARCHING FOR THEO will rewrite everything we knew about the disappearance of Theo Hayez two years ago providing fresh insights for the Coronial Inquest into his case when it commences in November.

A war table of family and experts will piece together the last movements of Theo Hayez – and much of what they will find will point to the involvement of another person or persons in his
disappearance.

AT THE WAR TABLE:

  • Jean-Phillippe Pector – Theo’s uncle with whom Theo stayed during his trip to Australia. JP as he is known has spear-headed the family’s search for Theo.

  • Ken Gamble – renowned private investigator who has amassed a treasure trove of digital information from here and abroad to plot Theo’s movements down to every step he took. He will also unveil possible connections to another mystery missing person’s case just months after Theo Hayez.

  • Nigel Phair – a Federal Police officer with 20 plus years investigating who now works as one of Australia’s est credentialed cyber experts with his own interpretations of Theo’s digital footprint and last movements.

  • Mandy Nolan – the Green’s candidate for Richmond, a seat which includes Byron Bay, the celebrity town at the centre of this baffling mystery. A resident of more than 20 years even she has been shocked at what this investigation has revealed about her tourist town.

ALSO FEATURING:

  • Laurent Hayez – Theo’s distraught father who issued emotional pleas for help and information during his visits to Australia to try to find his missing son

  • Lisa Hayez – Theo’s cousin, the two travelled together regularly during his backpacking adventure down under. She has some startling thoughts about what has happened to her cousin.

  • Leesa Horn – the Queensland beauty therapist who had an early morning encounter south of Byron Bay which rattled her to the core. She now believes she may have seen Theo lying injured by the side of a road just a day after he vanished but 5 days before he was reported missing.

Dumped after one episode.

TVNZ 1 has axed Under Investigation , the Australian true-crime solving series that was hailed as “a new genre of TV“, after just one episode.
Monday’s premiere averaged just 0.7% of 25-54 year-olds, TVNZ 1’s target audience, vs 1.6% for TVNZ 2’s Naked Attraction and 1.5% for Three’s re-run of Cocaine: Living with the Cartels .

Dumped is probably a more accurate description rather than axed.

Surprised this didn’t work, when the audience will happily watch locally introduced 20/20.

Damn I missed the first episode, wanted to see what it was like.

New season coming in February.
