I thought the same about Trial By Kyle, but it is apparently going to be a “thing”

I agree re Kyle but this just sounds worse. SMS polls? It sounds like the Hot Dogs show they once had on at 11pm.

I agree, but at the same time my preference is for completely original formats because rehashed formats very rarely work.

For example: With the glut of dating/relationship/wedding-themed programs currently on our screens, wouldn’t it be nice if one of the networks did a format which positively promoted single life?

It would be nice, but networks think controversy brings viewers to shows like that. Also viewers could read between the lines and think that person is “looking” for love. Also I think it would be difficult to do given the need to keep viewers glued to their seats without making it at least slightly controversial or sleazy.

A title for such a show could be a A Window Into Your Life and maybe focus on the life of one single person each week. A one hour documentary possibly hosted by a recognised storyteller such as Andrew L Urban. Not sure how a show like that would rate, but then again say if Ten did it and it rated low, perhaps it could screen on Saturdays on 10Bold

Another possible program could be a show called A Worthy Cause. This could be a program that pits 2 teams of 6 people to create an idea that raises funds for a charitable cause. The “winners” would then receive a recognition “prize” for their efforts.

The program could be done in one of 2 ways - either as a week by week program 2 “new” teams each week or base a series around the 2 fund raisers.

Background for how “teams” are selected would be based on a team “pitch” as to what their idea is and who is their charitable “beneficiary”.

Duration - could be a weekly show or a 3-4 episode a week slated show - 1 hour each episode

I’d like to see a good satrical panel news program. I really like Mock The Week from the BBC. it’s funny yet smart. A local version of this would be good

I was actually thinking Ten could do a heartfelt program called A Day In My Shoes that looks at the lives of different people living with a disability or debilitating condition. Each episode could focus on one “patients” plight. I was thinking either Lisa Wilkinson, Carrie Bickmore or Amanda Keller could host such a documentary style series.

it could be good but it is a fine line from great tv to exploitation and this is something they need to be wary of

Sounds similar to taboo.

Not exactly a TV show idea, but this is how I think a revived Nightline, should Nine go down that path, would work.

  • Revive the Nightline theme that existed between 2000 and 2005.
  • Opening graphics is the same as Nine’s Morning News, except instead of 9NEWS (and the Morning in the red tab below), it simply reads NIGHTLINE. A darker version of the graphics is also used to reflect the name of the bulletin.
  • Voiceover from Matthew O’Sullivan: “from Nine News, this is Nightline, with Brett McLeod” (the revived version would be produced from Melbourne). A wide shot of the Nine News set is shown.
  • McLeod says “Good evening” and then introduces the top story.
  • Format is the same as the morning news, with occasional live crosses. Reports would end with “[reporter’s name], reporting for Nightline”, like the good old days.
  • Instead of 9NEWS.com.au at the bottom right, it will simply say NIGHTLINE.
  • Sport is presented by Tony Jones (he gets replaced by Danika Mason on Today) and weather by Livinia Nixon (or Justine Conway on Fridays). On Thursdays and Fridays during the NRL season, Nightline would be shown straight after the post-game show in Sydney and Brisbane.

Alternatively, if Nightline is produced from:

  • QTQ-9 - Jonathan Uptin (or Emmy Kubainski, should QTQ hire her) would be presenter with Wally Lewis on sport (Michael Atkinson or Adam Hegarty on Fridays) and Garry Youngberry on weather (Luke Bradnam on Fridays).
  • TCN-9 - Sylvia Jeffreys with Cameron Williams (or Erin Molan) on sport and Amber Sherlock on weather. To avoid Sherlock’s day being stretched out, Belinda Russell becomes the new permanent presenter of Nine News Now, if that show survives.

In addition to this, Pick a time - say 10:30 and KEEP IT THERE. In the case above, show it on GEM or LIFE first if need be, than show it on the main channel when you can. there is nothing worse than TV shows shifting times. it was a major issue with the previous late night bulletins.

anyway

i wish there was a good late night news bulletin (and the replays of news on ABC 24 don’t count)

if i’m working a late shift at work (like i am this week) i don’t get home until after 9pm. sure, i listen to newsradio but i’d love to be able to sit down, eat my dinner and catch up with whats happened.

The problem is that you can’t trust networks to stick to their scheduled finishing times. Also, given Thursday and Friday nights Nine’s main channel (in NSW/ACT/QLD/NT) has NRL between March and September and on 9Gem throughout the rest of Australia, a set time could be a problem. However, a start time somewhere between 10:30pm and 11pm could work with no more than a 30 minute delay around Australia (in WA 9Gem would screen an early edition of Nightline).

Further to this idea, an updated Nightline could be shown between the same times ( 10:30pm-11pm) in WA with this edition screening on 9Gem Or 9Life at the same time in the other regions ( times vary depending of time of year and regions they screen in). If I was Nine and using 9Gem for this concept, I would move Call and Win to 9Go between 1am and 3am on the days 9Gem screen these, with infomercials starting at 2am each day on 9Gem

Even with NRL on Thursdays and Fridays, the Late News (Nightline) can still air at 10.30pm. The games finish at approx 9.45pm, and the “post match segment” currently runs for an hour. They can be 45 minutes long, as they just repeat themselves over and over again.

I agree, though I fear Nightline may not get enough exposure on Gem or Life (because some people might actually forget that it’s actually on).

But let’s see how that would unfold.

Speaking of Nightline, I managed to dig this out of YouTube - Mark Ferguson (presumably filling in for Jim Waley, as he would later do on Nine News Sydney in the early noughties) presenting a bulletin in November 1998 on the day Brian Naylor retired from the Melbourne newsdesk.

I have been thinking that Tenif Ten didnt do an early afternoon program on the main channel, could do an afternoon style program at 4pm possibly on 10Bold or 10Peach - which would ultimately affect what format you would use depending on which channel you used.

Option 1
Title: Afternoon Edition
Channel: 10Bold
Format News and current affairs
Time/Day: 4pm Weekdays
Duration: 2 hours

Option 2
Title: Afternoon Edition
Channel: 10Peach
Format Light Entertainment, News, Advertorials
Time/Day: 4:30pm Weekdays
Duration: 1.5 hours

New Game Show Idea (or I at least hope no one else has come up with this concept)

Title: Liar Liar
Format: Quiz show
Length: 30 minutes weekdays or 1 hour weekly

General Concept: A contestant is read a question by the host (quizmaster). 12 panel members will give an answer - only one of which is right. If the contestant guesses who has the right answer, he/she moves forward to next question. If he/she gets it wrong the contestant is eliminated.

Final Round - the contestant goes head to head with the panelist of their choosing with the opportunity of doubling their win in a round called “double or nothing” or doing the final round by answering 10 questions and securing $1000 bonus prize.

Ultimately similar safe points etc to Hot Seat as well how each contestant is selected for the evenings play. Similarities can be drawn to Think Tank re the panel giving suggested questions.

You’ve never heard of “Would I Lie To You”?

I had been thinking about a gaming themed show but unsure how to maintain viewer interest. This is how far I have gotten.

Two contestants play off

Round 1: technology and gaming based questions.

Round 2: contestants go head to head in a game selected by the winner of round 1.

Round 3: winner of round 2 game selects the second game for double points

Final Round: The overall winner answers technology and gaming based questions/problems
