General TV History

Kay McGrath, Rod Young, John Riddell, Jane Doyle, Rick Ardon & Susannah Carr (as @Biscuit45 mentioned) and many more I think.

Ten News 1993

https://youtu.be/on1pRNXwIiQ

In terms of commentators, Ray Warren has been around since the 70s (fitting that this weekend is retro round, he was calling the midweek cup for many years). Longest in AFL land is probably Sandy Roberts who started at 7 in the early 80s and is still going now on Fox, Bruce started at a similar time but did local racing and SANFL matches before moving to Victoria in 1984.

You’re forgetting Pat Welsh at BTQ7 who started in 1975 as a news reporter and was presenting sport shortly after.

Due to this weeks passing of Les Murray I’ve uploaded a 1991 edition of The World Game to YT, it’s incomplete but still a good chunk of it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYkED3jR6Dc

Also uploaded is the start of Sports Machine which directly followed TWG and was also presented by Les:

I’ve also uploaded SBS’ then-current ident in 60fps which I’d love to see more of. It keeps the smoothness from the broadcast/tape that is sorely lacking in any upload of these things (set to 720p to see):

It makes it look just…damn sexy.

I don’t think that’s a Melbourne one.

But Pot Luck:rofl:

I’m watching these hilarious clips of people making fools of themselves on national TV. What a crack up!!!

My guess is that PRG is from Channel Ten in Adelaide.

From what I’ve seen on tape, Ten Sydney had different styles of PRG during the 1980s:

The 2nd design (which I think might’ve been in yellow at some point like the 1st version, but I’d have to check on that) lasted on Ten Sydney even into the “X TEN” logo era but obviously with the logo changed:

After that, Ten decided to change the fonts/layout of their PRG with the incorporation of a coloured logo.

Seven and Nine on the other hand seemed to keep the PRG designs for their Sydney stations largely intact for years, with only minor alterations over time. It wasn’t until the 1990s and 2000s that PRGs really evolved into what they are now.

LOL, that was from a talent show from commercial TV? Sorry, but the quality of those performances is something I’d probably expect from a pub/club karaoke show on a Friday or Saturday night broadcast as a community TV program! :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t think I remembered seeing that font in the “Pot Luck” cap used on Ten Sydney’s PRGs. I definitely remember Seven Sydney using it extensively in their presentation during the 1980s. Lots of variation in presentation across networks back in those days.

Yes more people should be doing this. 25fps/30fps is evil

Sorry to be late to the party on this one, but to clarify the way the networks operated with regard to dirty deeds etc, up until the centralised payout centres, the three metro networks operated the same: The satellite program feeds were clean - black in the breaks and no tafter break supers - until a certain time at night, when the program feed would become dirty - commercials and supers. In the case of the Nine network this was about 2 am, when the GTV presentation coordinator would go home. In the nine network case, where each station often had a localised ID, say with a reflection of a local landmark, TCN also had a general network version to run during the dirty feed time. In all 3 network cases the clean feed would recommence at 6am. In the regional station cases, who may have preferred to ‘go dirty’ earlier than than the network’s designated times, they would have obtained a presentation feed either off-air or via microwave link.
Those stations who wished to continue local presentation after a dirty feed commenced on the Network prgram feed (QTQ was a common example) just had to dodge the commercials that came up on the feed. There were always exception to the above, especially around sports events, but that’s the general way it was done.
