… I first saw PALplus in Montreux in 1995 and it had been around for a couple of years then … Warner Bros gave a presentation about how they were shooting Murphy Brown on 35mm widescreen and cutting a PALplus 16:9 version for Europe with a 14:9 version for the UK and a normal 4:3 for the US and the rest of the world …
What was the whole thing about the ABC doing television news bulletins for certain regional areas? I believe it was in the 80s-90s…
I remember seeing a couple of Grundig PALPlus sets at PRODISC in Neutral Bay in the late 1990s.
ABC used to do regional bulletins in most or maybe all states at 6.55pm in the 60s and 70s … Townsville and Rockhampton were originally locally aired and had their own news …
Probably axed a long time ago due to budget cuts. The ABC did not have a bulletin in Canberra during the 90s it was only when ACMA introduced local quotas that Canberra got a news bulletin. Even though the quotas only applied to commercial networks and not the ABC.
They had a state based current affairs program that used to air at 7:30pm Fridays for a long time however it was recently axed.
The ACT News started on 30 January 1989.
Source: The Canberra Times, 30 January 1989. NLA Trove.
Then it was axed in August 1991.
I don’t think ABC has capabilities for regionalised opt-outs anymore?
After the above article had been published, ABC delayed the launch of its 30-min Canberra news service by a week.
By which time, ABC News Canberra was lead by former Ten Sydney presenter (retrenched along with several others during their cutbacks in Late 1989) Claudia Emery.
It probably goes without saying that the ACT received ABC News NSW (if not some form of ABC-TV NSW as a whole) between the August 1991 axing and September 2001 relaunch.
I didn’t think ABC-TV had the capabilities to do regional opt-outs anytime this century. There were separate capital city & regional feeds until maybe a couple of years ago, but these were only ever really in action for local radio spots.
Now I believe there are only state/territory-wide feeds of the main channel with (irrelevant to regional areas except for the 12 people who tune in to capital city local radio via Digital TV) capital city radio spots for all.
… that was a big problem when Freeview launched the first digital television campaign to help make Gerry Harvey even richer by spending Kevin Rudd’s $900 stimulus package on a plasma TV … the ABC was bribed into taking part in this campaign which promised “15 channels of free TV” in return for a $67 million extra funding for a new digital children’s channel … unfortunately the advertising (which also breached the ABC Act’s prohibition on commercial advertising) ran everywhere - including regional areas that still had only two or three channels and were not gonna get fifteen any time soon …
Freda tried to get me to go there and run it in 1987 and I ran in the opposite direction … they had another go in 1996 and I went there and took a look, but things hadn’t really moved forward …
… lovely lady … she and Gerald Stone talked to me in 2002 about the Head of Television gig that had just come up at SBS when she was chairman …
You knocked back CEO of Imparja and managing director of SBS. What other organisations missed out?

… nope not managing director of SBS, that was Nigel Milan who invited me back to Oz (I was working in Europe at the time) for the “chat” with Carla and Gerald about the Head of Television gig … and no I didn’t knock that one back … Stone was obviously looking for a Sam Chisholm clone to bash the public service ethos out of SBS and made it quite clear that he didn’t see me in the role … as for other organisations? well despite Bruce Gordon asking me to stay, I left WIN in 1984 after delivering the best ratings in its history (couldn’t really top that
) and Olympic Broadcasting wanted me to go on to set up and run broadcast planning in Beijing after doing so in Sydney and Athens, but I’d had enough of the Olympics by then so came home instead … sometimes the simple life is better ![]()
Other than the 9 WWOS Cricket theme (and probably the news themes) what other Australian TV theme music would be considered “iconic”?
Thats my team - Nine NRL song. Yes it’s not an original, but it’s good and very strongly associated with the NRL.
Much better than when the NRL used Chumbawumba’s Tubthumping in their ads in the late 90’s
While 10 had the AFL rights, I would have put The Holy Grail into the same category as above - its ubiquity carried through in much the same way, and took a long time to fade after 10 lost the rights years ago.
What was the whole thing in the 80s-90s about some workers at the Public Sector Union brewing up some Industrial Action impacting the ABC
And why the ABC? Why not Seven or Nine?
Seven or Nine employees would not be under the Public Sector Union, the hint is in the Union name.
Seven or Nine employees would not be under the Public Sector Union, the hint is in the Union name.
… except that they are … "The Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) is an active and progressive union committed to the promotion of a modern efficient and responsive public sector that delivers quality services and quality jobs. We represent around 60,000 members in the Australian Public Service (APS), ACT Public Service, NT Public Service, ABC and the CSIRO. We also have members in Telstra, commercial television and the telecommunications industry. "
i stand corrected
i stand corrected
… mind you, at the time of the industrial action mentioned by the OP, they didn’t … at that time I was in senior management at the ABC and, as I was responsible for the largest collection of staff in the joint, spent an inordinate amount of time doing battle with the CPSU about this, that and the other … except the “battles” were more like a bout in World Championship Wrestling - mostly for show - rather than actual hostilities … it was during this time that they boasted that they were so good at running the ABC that it was their intention to become the “union of record” for the entire television industry ![]()
Im looking for 3 music track IDs from the Network 10 Rugby League broadcasts of 1985-1990. The first track was used as try replay music mid 80s to 1990 but also as the intro to the NEC Big Game in 1985, a 40 second extended use of it in the video below before Ray Warren starts talking in the intro. 2nd track and 3rd tracks im looking for were used as try replay music 1985-1990 and are at the 23 minute mark and at the 36 minute 30 seconds mark of the video I linked to below.
Ive tried contacting Network Ten, Universal Music, and some rugby league and production music sites with no luck. If anyone can help me ID these great tracks, or knows who the composer could be, or has any suggestions to help find the track IDs elsewhere, please let me know.
Sorry Not too sure where to put this, With Prince Phillip Passing Away tonight, It has got me thinking What protocols does Australian TV Stations have if the Head of State a.k.a The Queen Passes away?
Does ABC do a BBC and all ABC Channels goes to ABC News 24?
