All valid points.
And Lego is tasteful
The poor performance of Lego Masters is a real surprise given its popularity in previous years. With the failure of Ninja, Celebrity Appreciate and Beauty and the Greek Nine could be in for some pain with its key franchises except MAFS and The Block now in trouble or not returning.
Im surprised with Lego Masters ratings too. It has been hugely popular over the last few years, but has failed to make an impression this year. Nine’s lucky with Q1 with MAFS.
With Lego being a Grand Masters season rather than a normal version a factor? Just because 10’s MasterChef All Stars was a hit doesnt generally mean thst every all stars will be a hit…

That’s what happens when they don’t offer any new shows, same shows each year.
A couple of thoughts on that:
There are likely contractual obligations between networks and production companies at play. It’s easy to sit and say there should be new shows on every year, but with shows like LEGO, they may have locked in a couple of seasons worth of shows at the peak of popularity. Breaking a contract isn’t cheap, so really it would only be done as a last option.
While I think viewers would like more variety in programming each year, the problem becomes where do you find the new formats. There isn’t exactly a plethora of exciting new formats out there that a network may take a risk on. That leads into my final point:
There is no guarantee that a new format will succeed. For every show like LEGO that can create an immediate impact with viewers, you have shows like Ultimate Tag, Holey Moley, or Brain Eisteddfod which fail to do much of anything.
The number to watch will be the BVOD number. That will tell us whether the audience is shifting between platforms or whether the audience is leaving all together.
I don’t think Nine will drop Lego Masters given the numbers aren’t dire but I think they are definitely under pressure to find a successful new format that works through the middle of the year. Conversely there is a real opportunity for Seven and Ten to make some much needed inroads into Nine’s dominance.
They need to find a new format/s not re-hash old ones. That said, they are trying Blow Up and 1% Club. And ventured into comedy with WITB.
It’s interesting since 2019:
Nine completely dominate from summer with the tennis, through Q1 and later in Q4.
While Seven are usually well and truly on top of Q2 and Q3 thanks to the AFL, with shows like Voice, Farmer and any other successful programs a bonus/‘cherry on top’ - which seem to have gotten Seven over the line in 2022 and 2021 - though the Olympics, Winter Olympics and Comm Games no doubt helped.
Whereas Nine won 2019 and 2020.
We know 9 have the Olympics now- who has the Comm Games coming up?
That is the question! Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s announced in an Upfronts later this year, Seven did so in 2021 for Birmingham 2022.
Blow Up just seems like Seven trying to do their own version of Lego Masters using balloons instead of Lego. I can’t see it doing well - it feels a bit like a copy cat format (at least from the promos) and you would think this show would be a lot more niche.
Isn’t it an international format?
It’s a Dutch format but the point is that Seven are trying to emulate the success Nine have had with Lego.
The 1% Club seems very reminiscent of The Hundred as well.
Trying to ruin Nine’s shows, like what they did with Spartan in 2018 to Ninja (after its 2017 debut smash hit) and it more or less worked, if that was indeed the intention as the former infamously flopped after the Winter Olympics I think it was.
