It was the race that stops (some of) the nation with Tuesday’s race topping the overnights with just over one million viewers. The presentation that followed averaged 882,000 with the Mounting Yard earlier on 735,000.

That is the lowest linear viewing figure for the race and compares to last year’s 1.2 million, 897,000 and 764,000. As per usual the rating number doesn’t reflect the true number watching as it only estimates viewers watching at home.

Whether there was any impact from Seven’s Big Dance coverage is hard to tell as lower audiences have become the norm this year and Seven’s coverage missed the top 20 ranking 43rd.

Laster, in prime time 10 got a boost with its best Tuesday audience in 10 weeks as viewing from the afternoon, especially in Melbourne, spilled into early evening viewing.

Otherwise it was another good win for Nine, bolstered again by T20 World Cup on 9Gem with an impressive 7.6%. Nine’s main channel was only one point ahead of Seven’s but the network was 6 points clear. 9Go! did slightly better than Monday, up to 1.8%.

With multiple codings for The Melbourne Cup, many shows that normally make the top 20, missed out last night. ABC’s 7.30 and Stuff The British Stole won the 7.30 time slot ahead of a Travel Guides repeat on Nine with Dogs Behaving Badly also making the top 20 for Seven.

Later, Madga’s Big National Health Check was also a winner for ABC. The Cheap Seats did well to rank 21st while The Traitors in 22nd place posted a season high - up 50k on the previous week.

Love Island ranked 201st with an audience the same as the launch. It has a BVOD of 73,000.

The ABC and 10 benefitted with The Block not in the primetime schedule until Sunday’s auction finale.

The live streaming figures for the Melbourne Cup race were also lower than last year’s 175,000.

T20 World Cup again did well on pay TV.

A lot of betting apps have inbuilt streaming of the Sky Racing channels. I wonder if more people are watching via this method rather than tuning in to the traditional broadcast.

Oh yes, I haven’t thought about that.

Well at least a few more people are getting into it, even if the overall number of viewers are low. It seems like most of it’s audience since the get go are hooked.

Ratings were down this year for the Melbourne Cup with Flemington packed for the first time in 3 years and unrestricted gatherings across the nation

More info on Cup numbers.

From my understanding the numbers have been steadily decreasing every years since 10 took over the Cup coverage? What were the 2019 Cup numbers… ? I think that’s the only fair comparison as Covid has had an impact the last two years.

HUGE numbers for the Chase in Melbourne. The show bores me to tears but certainly is growing down South.

Yes… clearly people didn’t want to stay and watch 10 News First. Shows that people will now immediately switch over to Seven and Nine for local news. And do you blame them?

10 News started at 6pm in Melbourne. The late cup coverage in Melbourne was up against The Chase at 5:30 and easily beat it.

Are you sure about that? The last race at Flemington was at 5.15pm.
The newspaper TV guides listed 10 News for 5.30pm.

Sorry, I was going on 10s original schedule.

Checking back it was at 5.30pm. The Chase was ahead of 10 News in Melbourne but 10 was ahead of The Hot Seat. 10 News was number one in the demos.

Better numbers for The Project than usual in Melbourne.

To be fair the actual Melbourne cup race was at 3pm. The late part of the Melbourne Cup had 410,000 viewers, so by the time the News came there had already been a big viewer drop off.

No doubt… but I remember the days when Mal Waldon and Jennifer Hanson presented. That bulletin often took out the win on Melbourne Cup Day.

All comes down to reputation and unfortunately 10 no longer have it in news.

@TV.Cynic Did 10 code the race as a 10 minute block in order to have it in the weekly tables? As the race is usually done and dusted within a few minutes. Perhaps why numbers may be down too? Well, one of the many reasons…

There was some impact of the Cup with Studio 10 running 7am - 10am AEDT live to all markets. Big numbers for the show in Melbourne saw it the number 2 choice in that market.

I have brought up that in previous discussions about changes to the reporting of the race numbers.

It isn’t so much the overnight numbers, but the Live BVOD viewing table that says that a program must be 15 minutes in duration to appear in that and the Total TV numbers. Bluey for example doesn’t appear in those ratings even though it is in overnight and 7-day numbers. This also applies to BVOD catchup.

On the last year of Seven’s deal these VPM tables were introduced so that race numbers must now be for a 15 minute segment of programming. You will notice that 10 does not go to an ad from about 10 minutes after the race has finished.
