World Cup soccer helped Seven to another overnight win on Tuesday thanks to the ENG v CHN game delivering 7Mate a +7% audience share. That helped put Seven 4 points ahead of Nine though Nine had the number one main channel.

The World Cup did well to top the multichannel list and make the overall top 20 with 259,000. Seven’s main channel featured double Highway Patrol that averaged 300k.

Nine post 7.30 featured a Travel Guides repeat that was second in its timeslot followed by a movie.

10’s Hunted was down 10k from the previous Tuesday but an easy demo winner while The Logie-winning Cheap Seats was up 50k to its highest audience in seven weeks,

The second episode of War on Waste shed 50k from the season debut while New Leash on Life made the top 20 for ABC.

10’s rebranded Nickelodeon managed 0.9%. which is the average Tuesday audience for 10 Shake but was down on the previous week’s share of 1.4%

I understand why the England v China game was on 7mate. But with those numbers for Highway Patrol being not that dissimilar, I think they should have taken the risk and shown in main channel. Then again, they got a combined total of 600k over the 2 channels which wouldn’t have happened if Highway patrol was on 7mate. Dammed if you do… dammed if you don’t.

Apart from England v China on 7mate and Hunted & The Cheap Seats on 10, it was a rare lull night on TV.

Missed opportunity for TGYH to debut, I always say that Tuesday nights are quite bland but Seinfeld and Frasier were on late so no complaints from me.

It is very interesting that people are now saying there should be more soccer in prime time because it was only a few weeks ago that everybody was bagging that suggestion.

Seven won all markets except Brisbane that was won by Nine - I’ve noticed that Brisbane seems to be less interested in the round ball. 7Mate almost reached double figures in Perth where 10 was only 1 point behind Nine.

Seven network won all key demos but Nine’s main was first in 25-54 and 10’s was first in 16-39.

Suggesting that ratings for International World Cup soccer will transfer through to local grade soccer doesn’t make sense to me. It’s like in the NRL where State of Origin is a top rating main channel property in Adelaide and Perth but regular NRL round games barely rate at all.

Thanks @TV.Cynic for sharing with us Nickelodeon’s top 10 ranking shows. Not surprising with Graham Norton and the three episodes of The Middle topping the list. Buzzle Gupples (at 9.20am) and Team Umizoomi (at 10.10am) rounded off the list.

Next week there are going to be record numbers of people watching women’s soccer. Many are now following it for the first time.

You really dont think the success of the World Cup is going to have a trickle down affect on all areas of the sport?

No one is disputing you that the Matilda’s matches next Monday will be huge, or the matches played so far either.

But you have to remember… the Men’s World Cup in early December 2022 had huge numbers on SBS. The A-League that followed on 10Bold had terrible numbers. It’s hard for the average viewer of soccer to follow the local competition “religiously” like the AFL or NRL.

It would be very nice if the Women’s A-League competition gets some viewers when it’s competition starts in October. But am not sure even if it has a FTA channel attached to it, or if it’s shafted behind a paywall (like on Paramount+ or 10Play :man_shrugging:)
