triple j

and? are all of these people actually interacting with your social content or are they scrolling past it? I really struggle to buy that having lots of followers is actually worth anything if they’re not actually interacting with the content

Captain obvious statistic that one.

Of course a single national radio station that’s core demographic skews younger is going to have the most followers on social media in Australia.

Every other radio station in Australia has individual local metro or regional social media pages plus may have an older audience that doesn’t necessarily use social media.

There’s a chance that the longest song record won’t be broken this year… it could be absolutely annihilated.

“The Dripping Tap”, by prolific Melbourne psych-rockers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, is currently doing well on Warm Tunas.

The song’s official running time?
18 minutes and 17 seconds.

What holds it currently? Knights of Cydonia?

According to the above article, both “Jesus of Suburbia” by Green Day (#61, 2005) & “Runaway” by Kanye West (#14, 2010) currently holds the record for the longest song on the Hottest 100, both clocking in at 9:08.

“Knights of Cydonia” does hold the record for the longest song to hit #1 on the Hottest 100.

Anyone been listening to the Hottest 100 today?
I’ve just tuned in, 10 songs to go!

I have no idea who will be # 1, but then it’s the only time of the year I listen to Triple J for more than a couple of songs in a row.

Spoiler alert…

Number 1 song this year was :drum:

Say Nothing - Flume Feat May-a

Well done also to Spacey Jane for getting three songs in the Top 10.

Mixed thoughts on the top 10 out there but thought it was significantly improved on last years. Yes there’s a little TikTok influence but not as much as many were predicting.

The attacks by News Corp on the ABC are relentless. Now they’re attacking the song and artist that topped the Hottest 100 and the whole countdown.

It’s the usual story though. They pick a few negative comments on social media and create these misleading articles which suggest this how the majority feel. Don’t they understand that the choices made were voted on by listeners? What are NewsCorp doing to promote Aussie music in Australia? Nothing.

Aussies fume over Hottest 100 top spot

This is always going to happen. It doesn’t matter what song people vote for they will never be happy because everyone expects their votes to be up the top.

The better countdown starts today at 10am on Double J. The Hottest 100 of 2002

For the first time in a few years I didn’t listen to the Triple J Hottest 100, so had a listen to the winning track Say Nothing by Flume & May-a on YouTube.

EDM is my favorite music but this track just doesn’t grab me.
I think number two track BOTA should have bee.n #1 and Oliver Tree / Robyn Schulz, Miss you a close second.
That would have been my top two songs if I voted.

I wonder how long it will be until Nova adds Saying Nothing to their playlist?

Controversial take time - this continual endeavour to promote Australian music has resulted in some absolute slop getting significant airtime, a large amount of which comes across as popular in charts like the Hottest 100 but is only ephemerally popular and boosted by a poor pool of choices.

I wouldnt be surprised that in the future there’s an attempt to rewrite history (like was tried previously with the 1998 H100 and Pretty Fly for a White Guy) when the countdowns are revisited in the future

I don’t think it’s necessarily the case that the promotion of Australian music has led to rubbish being played more than it should. I think it’s more that the people at JJJ who choose said Australian music are, to use a technical term, fucking clueless. Look at Kerser - his music is definitely not to my taste, but he is massive - and yet JJJ refused to play him for years. But they’re more than happy to play Kendrick Lamar and other American rappers.

Saddens me that all the ‘rock’ bands in these countdowns are these sleepy types - read Spacey Jane but others like Ocean Alley and The Rubens in recent years are similar examples. I’ve heard funeral music with more energy than these guys. Just dull and unexciting.

The Flume track similar - very typical of a winning track as it’s inoffensive to many so attracts a wide spread of votes. But that’s been an issue with the countdown and the voting system for many, many years now.

The less said about the News Corp articles the better, follows the lazy formula of modern-day ‘reporting’ by blowing some social media posts out of proportion to create a sensational headline. Sad too, because there were some interesting tracks in amongst the countdown, even if the Top 20 or so was fairly dull.
