If you are referring to the new pedestrian bridge under construction, that is for the new public pick up and drop off area in the car park complex.

Air New Zealand will always be a vulnerable business with competitors coming at them from all points.

I wonder if they should perhaps stand up a LCC like the Qantas/Jetstar strategy. I know it’s only a small nation, but they appear to be getting eaten alive. They have a very sub par business class offering also. Frequent Flyer program isn’t that great, I do note that it’s currently going through an overhaul.

Participants can choose a 4km sprint down the runway loop, a full lap (7km), two laps (14km), a 21km half-marathon (three laps) or the Community Runway Walk.

Quite poor, yep.

Without lie flat business seats. No thanks. The overnight return leg in business recliners would be hell.

I did fly the A320xlr to Perth in business in January and it was okay but I prefer lie flat seats.

They won’t be getting single aisle planes with lie flat business seats until 2028.

Philippine Airlines is already running Airbus A321LRs on the BNE-MNL route. Flown on it myself in economy - it’s great for the daytime flight from BNE to MNL, but absolutely sucks sleeping on the red eye from MNL to BNE. Hopefully the QF experience is marginally better.

I don’t think there’s much draw of Vegas for Australians. Almost nothing about it is unique - casinos? slot machines? sports betting? Why would you fly there to pay double for everything?

For events I can imagine some people going - but that’s not going to sustain a year round flight.

Plus about the A321 with Philippines is they have lie flat seats in Business and at least you get TVs in Economy.

The Qantas A321 is pretty much a Jetstar A321 (same seats - although cloth) with headrests and a tray of food.

As the Qantas press release pointed out, the Sydney-Las Vegas service would only be seasonal (December 29 to March 12 next year, after the 2027 NRL season opener in Sin City).

I think it would be appealing to those who want to fly elsewhere to US without having to go through LAX. A lot of people I know hate LAX and will do anything to avoid it.

There is also SFO and DFW for that, but customs at SFO is awful for the interrogation. Vegas will probably be better for this since it’s a tourist place, like Hawaii. The customs at HNL is a lot better than SFO was for me in that respect.

I wouldn’t want to do a stopover. I’d get a bit confused about the date.

Route 18 will commence service on Sunday, March 15. The timetable will align with airport worker shift times as well as all passenger flights to and from Avalon Airport.

Update 3/3

More details of Route 18 had been released. There will be 21 trips on weekdays and 20 trips on weekends, with services running from early morning to around midnight.

Could the flight have diverted to Perth instead?

We’ve had a trip booked to Oman over Easter (with a couple of nights in Qatar), which seems unlikely to happen now. So far we’ve only paid for flights thankfully. All of our accommodation we can cancel up until the end of the month, and although we’d planned some day tours, we haven’t booked anything yet.

We’ll see how things look in 2-3 weeks time. We’re open to changing destinations but from what I understand, we’d only receive a refund if the airline cancels the flights. So we likely won’t know until closer to departure.

Even if the airspace is deemed safe again, I think I’d still feel a bit uneasy unless things are completely resolved and Australia changes it’s travel advice completely. Best case is everything settles in the next couple of weeks. Otherwise hopefully the flights are cancelled so we get the money back and we can rebook somewhere last minute… maybe Thailand or somewhere.
