Travel Guides

Why? They’ve been advertising it pretty heavily. Maybe they are getting feedback that viewers are confused why/how a new season of a travel show is airing now. They really should have just aired it last year.

Maybe it will be paired with Celebrity Apprentice or Ninja Warrior down the track?

EDIT: it was included in Nine’s latest promo for Q2.

Bumped from Nine’s schedule? With all that promotion, makes you wonder why it really has been pushed? Just air it already. Its the only primetime travel show out there (those very random Getaway specials dont count. Lol).

Travel Guides will now return (at least for now) on Wednesday 28 April.

TRAVEL GUIDES RETURNS

WEDNESDAY 28 APRIL AT 7.30PM

With hilarious new reviews of some of the world’s best tourist destinations Travel Guides will have you dreaming of that next holiday when it returns on Wednesday, April 28 at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

Our favourite travel critics are back: the loveable Fren family, twin cowgirls Stack and Mel, posh retirees Kevin and Janetta, best mates Kev, Dorian and Teng, and travel addicts and longtime couple Matt and Brett.

The new season will see worldwide and local destinations such as Greece, Mauritius, South Korea, Cambodia, South Australia, and the Kimberley in far north-western Australia.

Beginning with a paradisiacal island-hopping holiday in Greece, our Guides visit historical sites in Athens, tuck into delicious Greek food, and try to keep up with the most beautiful influencers on the planet on the party island of Mykonos.

Greece turns out to be everything our Guides ever imagined, with pristine turquoise waters, sensational souvlaki, stunning destinations, and endless parties – but is their island-hopping holiday just too hectic to handle?

In each episode of Travel Guides, our five groups travel to the same location for the same week-long holiday, reviewing the cuisine, accommodation, activities, and tourist sights.

Opinions always differ, leading to brutally honest and often outrageous reviews as our Guides tell it how they see it and rate each holiday out of five stars.

Narrated by popular Aussie comedian Denise Scott, Travel Guides is produced by Nine.

EPISODE 1 – GREECE

In the series return, our Travel Guides take off on a Greek island-hopping holiday. Starting in the ancient capital, Athens, they hop aboard the ferry to the party island of Mykonos and the traditional island of Milos.

Greece is everything they ever imagined: stunning islands, turquoise waters, sensational souvlaki and endless parties. But will an island-hopping vacation through the cradle of Western civilisation be too hectic to handle?

To get started, our Travel Guides check out the historical sites of Athens, from the huge and imposing Parthenon to the original Olympic stadium. Putting their own twist on history, they go for a few Olympic records of their own, with varying levels of success.

Leaving the chaos of Athens behind, they board the massive ferry that takes tourists around the stunning islands of the Aegean Sea. This time it’s express to Mykonos, the former fishing island turned international party destination. The Guides tuck into delicious Greek food and try to keep up with the most beautiful influencers in the world at the Super Paradise Beach Club. Some of our Guides rise to the challenge while others are left in ruins.

Back on the ferry, our travellers are longing for more stable shores. The best-kept secret in the Greek Islands awaits them on Milos, where white volcanic cliffs curve like marble into vivid blue seas. Right on the shoreline, their accommodation is fishing shacks converted into spectacular waterfront digs.

But there’s no time to relax. The party has followed our Guides to this traditional paradise. It’s one of the biggest festival days of the year and the whole island has gathered to celebrate with bells on. Literally. As well as the bells, there’s food, wine and a lot of dancing. Even our most reluctant visitors must admit it – no one parties like the Greeks.

Will a week of island hopping around Greece be the ultimate experience for the Travel Guides? See what they rate their holiday out of five stars.

EPISODE 2 – MAURITIUS

Our Travel Guides discover the tropical island paradise of Mauritius off the east coast of Africa. It’s a week-long resort holiday with a combined French, African and Indian cultural twist. But will a week of living in an Instagram post be that exciting?

To get around the island, our Guides are driving the ultimate island vehicle, the Mini Moke. If they survive the mad coastal trip in the Mini Moke they’ll be staying in oceanfront luxury – the Paradis Beachcomber Resort on Le Morne Peninsula.

Palm-fringed, white-sand beaches and calm tropical waters welcome them at the resort, but it’s too good to relax and enjoy, so the Guides are straight into the smorgasbord of activities.

They try sailing catamarans and paddle-board yoga, with limited success. Perhaps their talents lie in golfing? The big attraction at the resort is one of the toughest and most beautiful 18-hole golf courses in the world. Who will nail a hole in one?

Getting into the cultural side of the island, our Guides check out the weekly Mahebourg markets for delicious local snacks. Then they sail across the aquamarine ocean to an offshore wilderness sanctuary for a David Attenborough moment. Giving giant Aldabra tortoises a shell massage in the Mauritian jungle is a highlight for our travellers.

The culture continues back at the resort with some exotic sega dancing and cocktails. Are our Travel Guides able to strike a pose? Luckily the dancing is done on a soft, sandy beach.

To get into the swing of local life, they then take to the track.

The oldest racecourse in the world takes pride of place in the Mauritian capital of St Louis and every Saturday is like the Melbourne Cup with far fewer fascinators. With some Guides having a little more experience at horsing around than others, it’s a day of winners and losers.

Apart from sensational beaches, Mauritius prides itself on its sugarcane rum, so our vacationers research the full process at the Rhumerie de Chamarel. This is no regular Bundy rum and none of the Guides are regular rum drinkers. Things get a little messy.

Next, to discover the lush jungles and hair-raising waterfalls of Mauritius, our travellers suit up for canyoning. Ziplining and abseiling down the guts of the Seven Cascades takes courage … and a lot of singing.

At the end of their tropical island holiday in the Indian Ocean, will our Travel Guides ever want to go home? And what will they rate Mauritius out of five stars?

EPISODE 3 – MEKONG RIVER CRUISE

Our Travel Guides are embarking on a luxury river cruise down the Mekong River from Cambodia to Southern Vietnam.

Along the way they discover the history, culture and food of these dynamic and emerging holiday destinations. But is a floating haven the best way to experience the Mighty Mekong?

Beginning in the small tourist town of Siem Reap in Cambodia, our Travel Guides are greeted with a tuk tuk ride taking them to an authentic Buddhist water blessing. This is no ordinary water blessing and some of the Guides regret wearing white.

Drying off, our travellers are introduced to the ancient Khmer warrior martial arts, including scarf-wielding fighters and crossbow experts.

It’s hard to walk around tropical Cambodia without running into a few bugs – literally. After getting a little too close and personal with a scorpion, our Guides hit the tourist strip for an afternoon snack … of glazed scorpions and deep-fried tarantulas.

The highlight of their trip to Cambodia is the world-famous Angkor Wat temple complex. Deep in the jungle lies the very site where the Hollywood blockbuster Tomb Raider was filmed, and our Guides attempt to stride in Lara Croft’s footsteps. At a nearby temple some of them have another run-in with the local wildlife.

Finally, it’s time for the luxury cruise down the Mekong River. With huge suites to relax in, fine dining and onboard bars, there’s very little reason to disembark. But our Guides are lured back to shore by an entire village dedicated to the craft of making silk.

Downstream, in the capital of Phnom Penh, our intrepid travellers pay their respects at the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum, learning the terrible truth about Cambodia’s awful history under Pol Pot.

Next our Guides sail into Vietnam, where in the riverside village of Cai Be they swap the ship for a small, wooden Vietnamese boat, a sampan. Will they become like locals, or are they a little too close to the waterline?

Leaving the Mekong River behind for the hectic streets of Ho Chi Minh City, the Travel Guides catch a cyclo for a frontline tour through the infamous traffic. They arrive at the sprawling Ben Thanh markets and pick up a familiar-looking celebrity guide. Who knew Luke Nguyen was taking food tours in his family’s hometown? For the true fans amongst our Guides, the day is finished off with a lesson at Luke’s cooking school.

See what they rate their Mighty Mekong holiday out of five stars.

EPISODE 4 – SOUTH AUSTRALIA

In this episode, it’s a wild and wacky road trip back home, off the beaten track through South Australia.

From Kangaroo Island to the Southern Ocean and the underground town of Coober Pedy, it will be a week of whacking it, packing it, and stacking it.

Our Travel Guides pick up their wheels and cruise down the scenic Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jarvis where they board a car ferry to Kangaroo Island – Australia’s third largest island, boasting a natural wonderland of rolling green hills, pristine beaches and abundant wildlife.

They better bee-hive themselves at King Island Living Honey, where they get close and personal with up to 10 million bees.

Next is a visit to the gin distillery on KI, involving a cocktail-making masterclass and, for the true gin junkies, a lesson in blending your own tipple.

For daredevils of all ages, the Guides head to the Little Sahara Adventure Centre for some sand-boarding down 70 metre-high sand dunes and then on to discover the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, home to over 600 native and rescued animals.

Next up is an adrenaline rush as they brave cage-diving with sharks off Neptune Island, the only place in Australia where you can dive with Great Whites. But first they must survive the overnight sea journey.

Posh retirees Kevin and Janetta were hoping the ship’s accommodation would be worth jumping into the sea with sharks, but instead they are faced with the unthinkable – bunk beds!

Back on dry land with all limbs intact, our Guides head nine hours inland. Will they strike it rich in Coober Pedy? Testing their luck, they visit Tom’s Working Opal Mine where anyone can rock up and play prospector for the day.

Finally, our Travel Guides take off on an Outback scenic flight crossing the vast Anna Creek cattle station and Kati Thanda (Lake Eyre), the world’s largest salt lake and Australia’s largest inland lake.

How will they rate their wild and wacky South Australian road trip out of five stars?

The wording in that article gives the impression that these overseas episodes were filmed during the pandemic, which is not the case.

That is such a misleading article.

It gives me the impression that this is the angle the show is going to try and take with the new episodes. I was hoping that they would make it clear at the start of the episode that these episodes overseas were filmed prior to the pandemic, otherwise it is only going to confuse viewers.

I was wondering if there will be a disclaimer at the start or the end of each episode.

is that not cultural appropriation?

Don’t be ridiculous, as long as they’re respectful of the Korean culture it’s fine.

No surprise. Most of the members here are not readers of women’s gossip magazines and most of us are not that interested in the women’s interests that they report. We’re more interested in the shows than the private lives.
