Tokyo Paralympics Coverage

Will it be streamed live on 7plus though?

In New Zealand, TVNZ will have exclusive coverage of the Tokyo Paralympics.

With AFL Finals on the Friday and Saturday night of the first week, I’m guessing the Paralympics coverage may get bumped to 7TWO in some states?

Yes, that seems inevitable.

If there using 7mate as well and it sounds like they are then I don’t think it will be delayed.

If there are AFL games during the day time slot (12-4) which would only be a Sunday.

Schedule Update - Opening Ceremony now on main channel. Not marked as LIVE anymore and delayed to SA and WA.

eBroadcast says still on 7mate in WA

eBrodacast is not up to date - it still has it on 7Mate in all states.

Like with the Olympics Opening & Closing Ceremonies, it was always going to be at least ‘near live’ (ie; eventually delayed by a few minutes) anyway so that Seven can squeeze ads into the broadcast.

I’m not saying that to defend either a) The scheduling change (the Paralympic Opening Ceremony should absolutely be shown live) or b) How Seven incorporates ads into the ceremony broadcast (though it’s something other broadcasters do in various ways). My point is the Opening Ceremony was always going to be shown delayed in some way.

Yes, but I’m fine with the small delay, but a real delay (of hours to fit the broadcaster’s schedule) is just not on.

Agree with you on both counts. My point was more geared towards others - your post just provided the best ‘launch base’ to make it

We’re a long way away from the days when the most we got from the Paralympics was a 1 hour daily highlights reel on the ABC at about 11pm. Even recent games haven’t received this level of coverage on a multi-channel.

Can anyone remember how SBS covered the 2004 Athens Paralympics? I remember the coverage was decent at best.

So for the east coast at least we are talking about a delay of 45 minutes. A previous start of 8.30 is now 9.15?

While it’s nice to be live, I’m not sure there will be too many people left disappointed. In fact most people won’t even realise.

The real contentious issue for members here will be if they use their ‘live and free’ marketing slogan.

This is a very pre-internet mindset. People will eventually find out about the delayed coverage and probably complain about it on social media!

You’re assuming there’s a demand to watch the Paralympic opening ceremony Live?

I’m only guessing here but the Paralympics Opening Ceremony on the main channel following the biggest show 7 has had in years is probably going to attract a larger audience than the broadcast on their secondary channel against their biggest show they’ve had in years. And nobody wants to start watching something mid way through.

A larger audience is not only beneficial for 7 but for the Paralympics, and Paralympians themselves.

The 8:30pm AEST original start allowed for a half-hour preview/build-up before the Opening Ceremony begins at 9pm. Would guess Seven will now have a shorter build-up before showing the ceremony.

Why have a build up if it’ll make it even more delayed? This is shocking… I’ll just get a VPN and watch it via TVNZ
