Tokyo Olympics Coverage

I agree but also seven wouldn’t have paid them any money yet for the rights. If the games are cancelled then they don’t hand over $170m and there’s an expense that they’ve saved. They were going to make a loss on the games as it was. Costs outstripped the revenue.

It’s a huge outlay for 2 weeks of huge ratings that invariably go back to normal. Attempts to relaunch are tepid at best given its contingent on having good programming that people want to watch.

As far as I’m aware, Seven havent given any indication what the terms of payment are - given its a multi-event deal a payment on a recurring basis (say quarterly or 6-monthly) would make sense

Would Nine be interested again (i.e.) London 2012. They managed to poach rights in late 2000s in a strategic negotiation, before Seven got them back for Rio 2016.

They now have the tennis and Married as a powerful promotion tool.

But they don’t really need it as such, they’re already on fire, it’d just add ratings and revenue for them.

Hugh Marks has said they’re moving away from loss making one off events. Highly unlikely they want them given they want to spend less on rights.

Indeed. There have been occasions in the past (most notably 2004 & 2008) when the Olympics have been quite a decent launch pad for new programming but by and large, viewing habits return to normal once the games are over. Perhaps no more evident than in 2000 when Seven enjoyed spectacular ratings for the Sydney Olympics, but Nine pretty much won the rest of that year before and after the events of September 15-October 1.

At the moment it’s not even clear if Nine are interested in keeping the NRL beyond 2022 (not that you can blame them for keeping their options open with Fox League eroding FTA ratings in recent years), so I definitely can’t see them spending up big on one-off events like the Olympics anytime soon!

Yes it’s the simulcast aspect that they’re against and rightfully so. This doesn’t seem to be ever going to change if these sports keep kowtowing to foxtel.

As for the olympics they aren’t as prestigious as before. Also seven have chosen to launch absolute rubbish shows off the back of them and therefore they aren’t the launch pad that is needed.

I can’t find this article anywhere on social media via Twitter. Normally DT would post a tweet about it with the article.

It’s in the Sydney confidential thing. It’s not a full article. It’s more like gossip crap so who knows if it’s even true.

There is an article from a few weeks by the Herald Sun.

wait… so is Seven giving up the 2021 Olympics rights??

If so, I hope 10 gets them. They do great sport broadcasts.

Just speculation at this point.

There may not even be a games at this rate anyway.

Was it written by Sam Armytage’s favourite journo?

Looks like Warbutton’s only tactic is to slash and cut everything they have.

There is an article about it here for those that aren’t subscribers to DT.

No I checked that because she’s usually completely wrong. Was written by some other news Corp hack.

AKA, pretty much exactly what he did at Ten?

The same reporter who claimed that Carrie Bickmore would move to Today with Karl Stefanovic.

Yep, totally a credible source.

Which worked really well

Given they tried to sell off the BBL after the big song and dance act they did to get the rights, it wouldn’t surprise me if they sold off the games but I just don’t think anyone would want them at this stage.
