Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Well done to Kareena Lee who won bronze in the 10km marathon swim. I think Kareena Lee has been fantastic in the marathon swimming during the Games.

Gold medallist Cate Campbell has missed out on one of four spots on the IOC Athletes Commission. She stayed behind in Tokyo for the election while her teammates returned to Australia (they are now in quarantine at Howard Springs outside Darwin).

Peter Bol finished fourth in the men’s 800m final. He actually led during the second lap but was overtaken by two Kenyans (who claimed gold and silver) and a Polish runner (who claimed bronze) with around 100m to go. Still a good result for Sudan-born athlete, who was the first Aussie to compete in the event since Ralph Doubell won gold at Mexico City in 1968.

Why does that have to be mentioned in relation to his sporting performance?

Australia crashed out of the Quarter Finals of the Women’s Basketball after losing to Thr United States 79-55. Australia simply had a lot of chances during the game, however they simply threw away their chances. United States Women have been dominant in basketball since 1996. Why is it so hard for Aussies to beat United States in women’s basketball? :frowning:

The USA have the top talent from the WNBA, who all play each other at the highest level game in, game out.
The Australians have half or less from the WNBA, don’t get as much time together etc, also Liz Cambage was missing.

I do wonder if Cambage’s withdrawal changed the dynamics of the Opals. They struggled during the group matches and did just enough to qualify for the finals.

They have already said it did.

Australia’s Keegan Palmer has caused an upset in the Men’s Park Skateboarding winning a gold medal, scoring 95.83 points.

NZ is doing well, 2nd place on the per capita medal table. Bermuda is ahead of them but that isn’t a real country.

What is the per capita medal table? Where is it?

Huge turnaround by US in basketball. Aussies were 15 up mid way through second quarter to only be down by 19 at 3/4 time.

The Boomers lost the match by 19. It was a golden opportunity wasted, given Team USA was missing a few big names.

UPDATED 11pm AEST:
Australia will play for the bronze medal this Saturday night against Slovenia. Slovenia narrowly lost to France 89-90 in the second semi-final. France will play USA this Sunday afternoon for basketball gold.

Australia did win two gold today: skateboarding as above, plus men’s 1000m kayak double (Jean van der Westhuyzen and Thomas Green).

Australia’s gold medal tally is 17, equalling the record in Athens in 2004. We only had 16 in Sydney in 2000.

And maintaining the lead on GBR. This is imperative as in 2012 and 2016 they beat us on the medal tally.

Before the Olympics and COVID, I had 10-13 gold as a pass mark for Australia

Australia lost 3-4 to USA in the women’s football bronze medal match this evening. Fourth is still the best result by an Australian team (men or women) in Olympic Games football tournament.

Australia men’s hockey team also lost to Belgium 2-3 in the penalty shootout in the final, after scores were locked at 1-1 at the end of regular time. It was the Kookaburras’ first final since they won gold in Athens 2004.

Well done to Belgium for winning their first ever gold medal in field hockey.

21-year-old Ash Moloney has claimed Australia’s first ever Olympic medal in decathlon, finishing third in overall standings after the final event, the 1500m race.
