Possibility:
Nine News Today using the 6PM set?
Hmm I think this could be a smart move.
Recent segments of Karl interviewing political leaders have gone viral. I reckon Chris Uhlmannās recent viral segment and subsequent hiring demonstrated to Nine that political content can get programs like Today and Nine News and personalities like Karl into the headlines.
This change might not be limited to Today - possibly a lot more coming to Nine News too.
Canāt see it working with the very limited amount of space and inflexible cameras of the news studio. They are talking about incorporating a bit more news, not becoming News Breakfast. There will still be cooking segments, musical guests, interview segments etc.
As much as Iād really like to see Today go upmarket, I canāt see that happening anytime soon and especially while Karl Stefanovic is still presenting the show!
After introducing new graphics, new sets, new regional bulletins for their SCA affiliates and new 4pm news bulletins for each state over the past 12-18 months, itāll be very interesting to see what other major changes Nine News could makeā¦
Could Today be making this shift to newsier, more political content in an attempt to not only differentiate itself, but to possibly scare off TEN/CBS from launching a āCBS This Morningā-type program in the future?
Channel Tenās only hope for breakfast is to skew towards a market that isnāt already being catered for. I think a Hot Breakfast style show with a sports and comedy edge is the only hope.
"The Today program will return next year āreinvigoratedā with an increased focus on politics and campaigning journalism ā but with a āno BSā policy aimed at stopping spinning politicians in their tracks "
But giving them the heads up wonāt be good. They just wont appear on the show
.
Tracy Grimshaw appeared on the show this morning talking about her Don Burke interview.
She 100% is not trying to push Today to become a 30 minute news bulletin on a loop.
She musnāt have got too drunk at Dickieās Xmas party last night then lol
Seems like Weekend Today is permanently in the shit studio now.
The plan is to be in studio 23 on Saturdays and in 22 on Sundays.
However, over summer (when there is no WWOS broadcasting) the team stay in the automated studio 23, which is financially cheaper.
How do you know? Has someone confirmed to you this?
Bad decision nonetheless. Looks awfully cheap.
This is about Milo so, you knowā¦ trigger warning! ļø
Karl, for whatever real reason, is not going to interview Milo - yes, Milo of the sold-out nation-wide āTroll Academy Tourā. Itās a shame because Karl is usually pretty fair. There is only one other host at TODAY, in my opinion, who is capable of interviewing him without it being a car crash, and that isā¦ Sonia Kruger!
Itās interesting because MID-morning television is, in a way, becoming one of the rare spaces on the TV landscape where alternative or ācounterā views are accepted. Note that Miloās fairest and most even-handed reception by far on commercial TV here is Australia so far has been the quite refreshing 18-minute interview he did recently with āStudio 10ā. (I donāt need to go into it, but Sarah and Joe actually teased out the issues with him in a respectful fashion without throwing out the usual labels). Maybe itās something to do with the advertorials! But thereās something about MID-morning programming and allowing a broader exchange of views than the normal left-wing, safe space echo chamber of the rest of the local media sphere.
By the way, note that Kyle and Jackie O - despite having almost diametrically-opposed views - conducted a very respectful 40-minute chat with him this week on KIIS 106.5 (https://youtu.be/CuCUXrg4tu4)
WOT?
Tim Gilbert co-hosting with Deb with Aislin Kriukelis reading news and Tom Steinfort presenting sport this week.
Seems a bit strange to have the sports guy step into the hosting role and the weekend host to step into the sports role.
Not saying Tom would be a better host than Tim but that would be more logical.
