News Corp is reporting that Seven is planning to resurrect Today Tonight in the eastern states, after axing Sunday Night as part of a corporate restructure.
Given all the rumours over the last few months and now Sunday Night being axed, it’s almost confirmed to be making a comeback.
The show will need to have a high-profile anchor to compete with Nine given that they have really taken over the 7PM slot with no “current affairs” competition.
I reckon it’ll either be Melissa Doyle or Karl Stefanovic.
Please give Mel a role she deserves.
She’s a great presenter, journalist and interviewer.
She’s been loyal to a network that didn’t reward her for years of service and the role she played in the success of Sunrise.
And she was excellent on the 7pm bulletin on 7Two.
I can’t see Karl walking away from Nine just yet (and if he does, I’d see him going to 10 rather than Seven)…
I’d put my money on Melissa Doyle.
SMH says it otherwise
The vital piece of information in that news article is:
Hopefully Mel Doyle or Angela Cox get the hosting role.
It would save money and production costs by not (re)launching a weekly current affairs show.
Wasn’t Today Tonight Adelaide and Perth meant to be in the firing line?
I am not a big poster of these types of shows. However, I think part of 7’s dominance in Adelaide and Perth has to do with Today Tonight.
Monkia has been hosting TT on TVW-7 in Perth for quite some time
approaching 22 years hosting the program
It was mentioned on Blackbox’s podcast that the Adelaide and Perth editions are currently under review.
I can’t see them lasting in this tv landscape.
a landscape where they crush the other channels everynight?
I think the question is, if they axed them and extended the news to an hour, would viewers turn off?
Do Seven want to risk it given the rest of their prime time schedule is no longer dominant.
This is the problem, they need to stop chopping and changing things because it does them no favours.
Viewers in Perth and Adelaide are clearly loyal and part of the reason is that hardly anything has changed since at least 2000.
You look in Sydney, Brisbane etc, they have had so many changes since 2010 and it’s left them at times worse off.
Both local editions of Today Tonight is the main reasons why Seven Adelaide and Perth are successful.
Would be mad to axe a popular local current affairs show
I don’t agree that the network is successful in Perth due to TT / more like TT is successful because of the networks success.
