Nine’s coverage of the Women’s State of Origin Game One with main channel coverage along the east coast topped 900k for the third year in a row. The rating for NSW’s win was 980k and compared to last year’s first game that had 927k and the 2024 game that had 941k.

Meanwhile, Collingwood and Hawthorn played out a thrilling 93-all draw to an audience of 768k, an 8-week high for Seven. Earlier, Home And Away was again the top entertainment show of the night with 802k despite not being on the main channel in all markets.

On Seven in NRL territory, a repeat episode of Highway Patrol was at 7.30 had 332k and later, Britain’s Got Talent Audition Show 8 had 231k.

Over on 10, it was a special Fan Favourites episode with a look back at 12 years of Gogglebox had 477k, down 45k on last week’s regular episode. The Claudia Winkleman Show was back for its third airing but missed the top 30.

ABC’s 7.30 dropped out of the top 10 to 586k while Back Roads at 8pm was down 25k to just below 400k. Episode three of Grand Designs that followed edged lower to 361k. Rick Stein’s Australia premiered on SBS to 167,000.

A Current Affair was number one at 7pm with a 90k lead of ABC News while Millionaire Hot Seat again made the top 30.

That’s an unbelievable figure for Women’s Rugby, especially given the number of viewers outside NSW/QLD would have been minimal.

Well worth Nine’s decision to show it on the main channel in Melbourne.

Not to take away from the stunning ending of the AFL matchup, but that’s what SoO does - M or W. It rates like it’s always been.

Good figures though origin is exclusive to 9 - there’s no Fox simulcast

What did it rate in Melbourne though? I’d say the scheduling decision was either contractual or Nine trying to please the NRL as I’m sure RBT would have rated better.

These figures are coming from the northern states. 9 could have aired anything in melbourne, and it would have rated more than women’s origin in melbourne.

Nine only has themselves to blame here. The more they air NRL, the more viewers they will lose to 7. I get airing storm games, because all local teams should be prioritised. But women’s state of origin has 0 interest for southern viewers and old repeats of anything would have tripled those figures. I remember Nine aired a few games on the main channel in melbourne earlier this season, but dumped it due to disastrous ratings. Maybe they should do the same here

It’d be a contractual thing, for Nine to air it on the main channel even though it rates lowly in Melbourne… might still pull in some reasonable ad $$$ for it from gambling though (SEN style).

Ouch! Not good.

Airing the women’s state of origin in the non traditional states is a good thing. It promotes the games even if there aren’t many people watching. You may get some casual viewers who may decide to keep watching. There is games 2 and 3 to come so it might help drive up those ratings too.

It’s good for the NRL. But it isn’t for Channel 9. You’re basically giving up the entire Melbourne audience for the night, and Melbourne has always been a strong market for 9. I’m sure maybe there is a contract stipulation involved here, but I think it’s more about 9 staying on the NRL’s good side considering they need the TV ratings. Either way, the overall ratings are fantastic though, and credit to the NRL for making the origin an entity - something that almost feels seperate from the NRL itself.
