The Matildas’ World Cup campaign got off to a good start on Thursday night and as well as a bumper crowd in attendance over 1.2 million watched the game on Seven – that’s counting metro linear numbers with BVOD and regional to come.

The event was the number one show in all markets except Perth. That saw Seven with its second +40% share for Thursday this year. The afternoon’s NZ v Norway ranked second in the multichannel table with 139,000 for its afternoon timeslot.

Seven was almost 10 clear of Nine that otherwise did well to get a +30% share with a split main channel schedule featuring the fourth Ashes test and NRL. The cricket saw 550k for the first session that was on 9Gem in NRL territory with a 5% share.

Meanwhile, 10 didn’t pick a good night to launch its new Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly, that otherwise didn’t do too badly up against the sporting competition with a +300k result. It could claim to be the top entertainment show in prime time. However for both 10 and ABC it was their lowest Thursday share of the year while it was SBS’s second lowest.

The headline match of Women’s World Cup (without an injured Sam Kerr) beat the cricket. Seven and tournament organisers will be delighted. But we may not know how many people watched the telecast (especially Australia v Ireland) through Optus Sport until after the final on August 20.

In Perth, Australia v Ireland on 7mate was narrowly in front of the cricket on 9Gem.

The debut of Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly did OK. It will be interesting to see how it comes up against the cricket and the WWC next Thursday night.

Amazing result for the soccer!

It is incredible that is was only last week that Channel Ten didn’t think the Matildas were good enough to put on the main channel.

Some people will say it is just the World Cup but the fact is that women’s soccer has beaten the NRL, the AFL and the Cricket.

One of the networks needs to cash in and start Wednesday Night Football now (mens and womens) because soccer is the fastest growing sport in the country

Wow. Impressive numbers for the Women’s FIFA World Cup. Seven would be over the moon.

That’s huge for Women’s Soccer. I thought it would do well but didn’t think it would do that well. I guess being a World Cup match with the Australian team and being played in Australia in a prime time slot made it very attractive to viewers.

Seven won all markets except Perth where Nine had a rare +3 point win while Seven’s share was the highest in Sydney.

There was no AFL game last night.
Domestic soccer doesn’t rate in this country. Nobody is going to watch a Wednesday night A League game between Adelaide United and Central Coast on 10.

Unbelievable result for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, I too knew it’s do well, but not that well, especially against the Ashes as well as NRL and other shows.

If the Aussies continue to progress, like we’ve seen with major global nationally-appealing sport events in recent years, we could be looking at a mega number, up there with Ash Barty’s record Australian Open final night last year.

This makes things interesting now, with rain forecast tonight and especially tomorrow for the Ashes

Ratings for the NRL on Foxtel were down by more than 50.% of what it normally attracts

Tv.Cynic, do you have a figure for the audience in Sydney for the NRL last night?

Dont take the bait.

1.97m total… Woah! Upcoming Matildas games should do that again if not higher and fingers crossed for WC closing stages with surely a 2023 top program rating if play let alone win the final.

–

SMH story by Karl Quinn, also noting their own broadcasters’ in comparison much lower result for their major sport head-to-head (which I thought was surprising but good to see not intentionally left out):

Thanks. I’m guessing that has to be the lowest figure for an NRL game on Nine in over a decade
